I am having a MUA on momday and have questions!!!!
« on: March 21, 2009, 09:22:32 PM »
Hi there, I am new to this stie...I fell and tore my meniscus back in Feb last yesr.I also had a fracture to the lateral femoral condyle. The OS finally did surgery in July, he did an arthroscopy, plica rescetion, chondroplasty of patella, partial meniscectomy of my left knee. I am 8 months out od surgery and I have pain in the patella area and can only flex to 90..that's why the OS is going to do a MUA...I have questions on if it is going to help  at all and what are the risks involved?  I go to pt twice a week and after months of aggressive pt this is all I can get the knee to move.

Tigerbear,

I had a MUA 10 weeks after my TTT and such. surgery.  I could also onely bend actively to 90 degrees.  i was nervous, but had a few friends who'd had it done by the same OS I had.  Anyhow, for me it was the best thing htat happened to me.  I was able to bend to 120 the next day and besides one set back I just kept getting better and better, until I had regained Full ROM.
risks, - If your Os is not familiar with this procedure and hasn't done many  there is the risk of tearing the quad.

benefits, hopefully full ROM -

the thing is with this procedure you are defiinately going to have to work hard after the procedure and let PT do their job and bend it.  it will probably be painful.  (But I decided that after what I'd already been through I could handle just about anything)

Just a side note.  When i was in PT there was a guy who was there with me and had ROM problems like I did, but they decided he was not a good candidate for a MUA because he didn't work hard in PT nor would he do his home exercises.  So he wasn't offered a MUA.

Good luck

Hi,
I think 8 months out is too far to do an mua without an loa first. I got an mua done early on and the os still ripped all my cartiledge in the trochelear groove and patella, he also cause a chondrol defect. I am not meaning to scare you, but please go to someone who has performed alot of these an AF SPECIALIST listed on this board and make sure you get an loa. Please read up on this board about AF and look at all the other experiences with an MUA including my own. I am 2years out from the orignial mua, but had to spend the last year flying out to an AF specialist and doing special rehab. I am good, but there is no solution for the damaged cartiledge which is grade 4!  I wish I would have gone to an AF specialist from the beginning. Good luck, Summer

Hi Karen,
If he has already messed up on a friend, I don't know. Please go get another opinion. I'm telling you my knee cartiledge is so messed up and I'm only in my early 30's. Please, I don't want to see anyone else suffer from the MUA like I have and so many on this board have. good luck, summer

Hi,

I had a TTT in june 08 and after gaining VERY LITTLE movement in pt, I opted to have a MUA done in Dec 6 months post op, and I now have nearly full ROM, I dont think I will ever get full ROM back but im so pleased I had the MUA. Its one of the best decisions I have ever made. There was scar tissue blocking my movement

but obviously go to someone who is qualified in this procedure

5-3-07 injured knee-no ROM
2-5-07 LK scope + MUA
26-6-08-LK TTT and scope
10-12-08-LK MUA

Hi there. thanks for the response everyone. I am 40 and in good physical shape I am a vet assistant and I wonder if I will ever be able to go back into the work I love to do with the way my knee is.  I have been out of work for an entire year now.  I am concerned about this MUA  due to the fact that I have a friend in pt who has the same OS and he has done 4 different  surgeries on a friend and she is now in worse shape than before her initial surgery...I am confused on what to do next!!!This is a workers comp situation here and  I think I have to do as they say and see where it goes. That's why it took my OS 5 months to do the initial surgery...I walked on a fractured bone with bone shards in my knee for months...every step I took did more damage everyday.  I do work at pt and do my home exercised but I am STUCK at 90 degrees and the knee won't budge.. When I went into the OP office to sighn my concent this past friday, all that he said to me is this is a quick and simple procedure there are rishs involved with any surgery so sighn these papers and I will see you on monday morning...I asked him if there was any chance this will make things worse, he said it will help with ROM and if there is anything mechanical  wrong with the joint they would soon find out in my follow up appt in 2 weeks. If this does not work then he will go and do an open knee surgery to remove any scar tissue and fix any problems he can't see now.  I have not had a mri since last feb so who knows  what is going on inside my knee at this point. Thanks for listening to me vent about all of this..all I can do is pray everything works out for the best tomorrow.  I will keep you all posted!            thanks Karen

Hey there!
I just had an MUA done feb 26th, also had my knee cleaned out of all the scar tissue.  My knee was frozen for quite awhile at 75deg, and after sx I was at 90-110 depending on the time of day.  I was right on the CPM machine in recovery, and started PT right away.  I know everyone's situation is different buy mine went well.  I have been going through a 7mo ordeal with my 2 sx's but doing so much better the second time around!  I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there. I had my MUA earlier today and it was not too bad. I am swolen and brused and very sore right now. Mu OS injected two things into the joint to munb it for awhile and something maybe a steriod to reduce inflamation. I Know it's just a bit after the procedure, but to me I can't move any more than I could yesterday. I go to pt tomorrow and will see what kind of numbers I can get there. I am on loratabs for the pain every 4 hours. I have taken one today cuz the injection seems to be wearing off allready. Is this normal?  I never got to ask the OS what was done in the or, the nurse told me I would find out on my follow up visit in 2 weeks. I guess I'll just go back to doing what I normally do, with the exception I am on crutches for a few days to reduce any inflamation as per the nurses. I hope something good comes out of this, but I kinda think I am in for yet another surgery of some kind.       Thanks again Karen

Hi Karen,
So glad you did ok today, I know your sore, but keep trying to bend it now if you can....take your pain meds, keep up with them so the pain doesn't get ahead of you.  The pain will ease up in a week or so.  Eveyone is different in there recovery, I was in the hospital for 4 days with my situation and I had an epidural catheter in my spine for 3days, so I didn't feel my legs whoo hooo!!!!  It was the best until they took it out.  I kept up with the meds and kept bending it with the cpm machine, and I'm in PT where there trying to kill me ha-ha.  They are bending it in ways that I never knew it could bend :o  So you think there is more sx in the future?  I hope not.  Usually the bruising is from the OS manipulating it.  My OS said mine was not pretty, I had so much scar tissue in there that when he was trying to bend it there was alot of crunching, tearing, and popping going on eewww!!  So you didn't get a chance to find out what happend?  If you don't want to wait til your visit, see if you can leave a message for your OS to call you, they usually don't mind...of course it's after there day is done ha-ha!.  Mine took a couple of pics during sx of my knee, maybe you can get an idea of what they do....I have bruising under the skin from the tearing.  I hope you can get a little rest tonight, the first few days are the hardest, but you will start to feel better soon.

Best wishes& keep us posted!
 Karen...from Boston.............

Hi again all. Well I had pt on tuesday and my knee is very swollen and brused today. I was moving on my own to 90 degrees before the MUA now I can't seem to get past 80 degrees. In pt they said not to worry because maybe it's just  from the swelling and inflamation of the MUA itself.  I think it did NOTHING to help at all, maybe it's too soon to tell. I am on loratabs every 4 hours for the pain. I see the OS in two weeks to see what he wants to do next. At this point I am not to happy with his attitude about my knee. All he said to me on the morning of my MUA was " all this fuss for one little knee" He was probably trying to make a joke but I don't think it's funny. I am in constant pain and can't move normally at all anymore I think it's serious!!I wonder if it will ever get better, the people at pt tell me to have faith and just try my best I will do what I have been doing for the past year, live day by day> Thanks again to listening to me vent... Thank you Karen

Thanks for the info. I am elevating the knee a lot and have ice on it all day. it seems frozen at times..haha!! I do some of my non strenious pt exercises twice daily and am trying to streach it myself at home. I just don't see any kind of improvement in fact it seems to be getting worse! I go back to pt tomorrow and will see what they think. Thanks again,  Karen

Are the PT's doing patella mobes to the patella, quad tendon, and patella tendon. I'm not sure if its important for an MUA but I know with an LOA it is. If any one who has had AF knows.........please comment? What types of exercises do they have u doing at pt? -Summer

Hi There again. I do lost of streatching at pt and at home too. I do the basic calf streatch, hamstring streatch, quadriceps streatching and tightening, lost of heel slides for knee flexion. also do standard knee flex/streatches also I do front thigh streatches with a belt arounf my ancke, isometric quadricep streatches, leg lifts, weight shifting, stair streatches, wall streatches all after I am warmed up with the heat first. Afterwords I go 5-10 min in the exercise bike just piviting back and forth bucuse I still can't get near all around. After all that they streatch my knee and leg as well as move the kneecap around. Today my pt said she was not sure what she was feeling in the knee, before the MAN she had noted a springs end feel to the joint which she said was scar tissue, maybe the MUA did break some of it up I am not sure, I still can only get to 85 degrees today..I was to 90 before anything was done to the knee. It is not swollen but is very brused...I loke the color purple just not on my shin..haha. I use ice when I am at home and keep it up whwnever I can. I just am not the kinda person to sit still fro vey long. I am still going up and down the stairs, only one at a time. and doing all my normal household stuff just at a slower pace. I have gotten used to dong things differently in the past year or so. I just wonder what the next step is????My pt wasnt my to ask the OS to do another MRI to see what's going in inside of the knee before doing anything else involving surgery. I have not had an MRI since the fall last Feb. Thanks for listening...Karen
