4 years of dislocations due hypermobility
« on: December 16, 2008, 01:14:55 PM »
hi im michelle . im 23 and ive suffered with patella dislocations for 4 years . im in need of serious help as everyone is running out of ideas i think ! ive had many major operations .. last surgery i had was 6 months ago which is called a tibial osteotomy and advancement (all surgeries ive had are on the left knee) nothing has worked so far . im still having dislocations . ive been told that im not only hypermobile but im VERY VERY VERY HYPERMOBILE !!

next option is to have synthetic ligaments , but ive done my research and ive found it 2 be mostly negative feedback . ive been given different kinds of braces , nothing stops the dislocations . ill have a dislocation even with a brace on ! cast is the only thing that stops them popping out but i cant live my life being in and out of casts !!

im quite an expert now when it comes to knees and dislocations because ive had 2 deal with it for the past 4 years . what other options do i have ? i would love to be able to go bk 2 being active , and get back into work etc but at the mo its impossible with these unpredictable dislocations .... help woud be appreciated .... cheers  ;)

Michelle,
Sorry you are having such a rough time. What surgeries have you already had? When you say synthetic ligaments, are you referring to an MPFL reconstruction (Medial Patellofemoral Ligament)? Or is it something else you are referring to? There are quite a few on here that have had the MPFL recon that can tell you more about it. I have "laxity" in my joints, but I mine aren't that lax I don't think. I am considering the MPFL reconstruction and I thought the research for it looked fairly promising, although not everyone has had a good experience with it. Anyway, hope you can find something that works.

Michelle,

I know it's been a while since you initially posted, but I may be able to help.  I recently (this past week) had the MPFL Reconstruction that Kimi talks about in her post.  If that is what you are talking about when you speak of "synthetic ligaments" then I can talk you through the procedure, what it has done for me (so far) and what my condition was before the surgery.

Let me know if you still need information and I'll do my best to help ya out...

Michelle,

Sorry forgot something :o...when you say "dislocation" is your kneecap dislocating or your entire knee?  Much different surgeries used to treat either one.  Thx...

hey thanxs for ur posts guys .. sorry its taken a while to reply . i havnt checked the site for a while now . its my patella that dislocates on both knees . not the actual knee itself . my surgeon has now changed his mind . he doesnt want to use synthetic ligaments as he said i would benefit more if i had donor ligaments transplanted into me .. the thought of this freaks me out tho !! any info would be much appreciated .. cheers all :)

Hi Michelle,

Did you end up getting another opinion from a knee surgeon in London ? It would be worth while doing that.

Hi Michelle,

Can't you just get your GP to do a referral for you instead of waiting for the doc at the hypermobility clinic ? Or does your GP not really understand ?

kjwilkin ..

yeah my GP is very good at understanding my sutiation and condition .. but from previous experience he is VERY SLOW at following up on requests from myself !! i will make an appointment to see him next week as i need 2 make sure i will be covered by the NHS to have another opinion up in london as its out of my area (i was explained this b4 as the trust might expect me to pay for it myself as i am going out of wales therefor they wonder why should they use their money for me to see someone up in london) does that make sense to u ?

hey !!

doctors !! they get paid all that money and for what !! the consultant in the hypermobility clinic wrote to my doctor bk in jan . apparently they never recieved any letter (yet again everything being delayed) so my dad took a photocopy of my letter down to them 2 weeks ago (saw doc yest) have they done anything about letter ............... NO !!! apparently the doc hasnt heared anything bout this 2nd opinion so im going 2 have 2 ring up the hypermobility clinic today to see what will be said .

i feel that for the 4 years ive suffered with this we have been on our own dealing and coping with it . NO support what so ever from anyone which isnt fair !!

i am again in 2 minds about having this surgery (they planned to use donor ligaments) i think i need 2 do more research on it to find out if its done ofter & what the success rates are etc .. this might put my mind at ease !! how ru ?

Hi Michelle,

Sorry to hear you've been through the mill.

Just can't believe how incompetent some of these people are. It does my head in !!! Fortunately I have a good team behind me that are just awesome. Don't know where I would be without them.

How did you get on with the hypermobility clinic ?

I seriously wouldn't consider that surgery until you've had more opinions. Doesn't sound like a very good option right now.

My knee has been doing quite well. Back in the gym, hydro pool and pilates. Had another flare up after the Coldplay concert. Been in agony today, but was definitely worth it. Was sooo much fun last night.

Have a good weekend. :)
