What did I do to my knee??
« on: October 28, 2008, 04:26:54 AM »
Hello all, first time poster here...

Last Monday, I woke up with pain in my left knee after an active weekend (horseback riding and walking along nature trails - no pain, strain, or discomfort of any sort throughout the weekend and definitely no blunt trauma or falls). I felt a grinding sensation towards the bottom of my kneecap near my shin, aching and pain in my thigh straight up from the kneecap, and pain/discomfort on top on the top of my knee.  Stairs are quite painful as is anything that has my knee bent and bearing weight (ie: going to/from a seated position).  Also, if I keep my knee bent (when sitting for extended periods of time), it hurts to straighten my knee out again.  The most painful thing is when I'm sitting and I try to raise my left leg out straight in front of me.  Now a week later, there is still a fair amount of pain, most noticably in my thigh directly above my knee and slight towards the inside of my thigh.  I do not see any obvious swelling, redness, or bruising on or around my knee and it seems to be about the same temperature as my right knee, nor has any of this been apparent since it started hurting a week ago.  I can walk reasonably comfortably but stairs are still painful, especially going up stairs.  Anything that heats up my knee (activity, heat pack, baths, etc) make it feel more painful.  Cooling it helps a little bit as does rest so I've been trying to do that as much as possible though all the help seems to disappear once I'm up and about again.  Any ideas as to what I did to my knee???  I've never had any problems like this in any joint before!

We can sympathise but not diagnose - get to a doctor if you are worried.

Sounds like you have something going on in your knee and the longer you leave it before you see a doctor (an orthopaedic specialist if you can) the more you are going to worry if the pain continues.
