Alison - sorry for you pain.  What treatment are you currently getting?  Have you had surgery?  The best thing I can tell you is to make a list of all your questions and ask your OS.
such as -
What do you expect from the outcome of the current treatment?
What restrictions do you forsee for my knee?
What should I watch out for?
What should I NOT do?

Sending  healing rays your way
8/4/07 fell
8/5 diagnosed TPF
8/6 surgery plate and 6 screws
8/12 out of hospital NWM

9/18 OS appt - WBAT with crutches
10/10 - WBAT with cane
10/27 - back to work w/cane

OK the first thing we deal with is how anxious you're feeling.  Take heart, everyone goes through this horrible feeling.  The ER and OS are great at giving you the barest minimum of information and whatever it is, it's never enough.  Playing the waiting game is dreadful, information can help with that.

It will heal.  The body is amazing.  It depends on what you've done to the knee.  Did you have surgery?  If so, it takes awhile to get things back to normal but you get little tastes of normal every day...getting to shower without a brace on after 6 weeks, driving a car around 12 weeks. Down to one crutch and then no crutch, some days when you might need alittle crutch support, then back to no crutch.  Sleeping on your side, rolling over in bed without having to help your knee to do it. Going up a step without thinking about it first. Sitting down in a chair normally.  Everything comes back slowly and as a result of the work you'll do in PT.

If you didn't have surgery, it's different again.  Usually a brace for 6 weeks with crutches, PT and shorter recovery time.

The bone break:  I was told it's at the sticky stage for the first 2 weeks, the edges are "looking" for each other. By the end of weeks 4 the edges are starting to join together, by the end of week 6 the fracture is setting.  It takes to the end of week 12 for the fracture to be strong.  For some people, these stages are abit longer.  That just what I was told by my Fracture Clinic.

Ask specific questions and the lovely people on this site will answer them as best they can from their own experience.

I know you're scared and feeling completely desperate...come here, people will do their best to help you.

Have you had surgery or are you in a brace?  Need to know what you've had done before I can offer any suggestions as to what questions to ask.

OK,  understand now.  First, the recovery from a broken patella that's not a displaced fracture (needing surgery to pin and screw it together) is much easier.  I had surgery on the left knee but will not be having surgery on the right knee.  The fracture healing process is the same, I mean that the body does the same thing in the stages of healing.  Stage one, is the sticky stage where the edges of the fracture are looking for each other, that happens in the first two weeks of the fracture. Second stage, at about week 4 is the edges have joined and are tryinging to mesh together.  By week 6, the fracture knitted together but it can take another 6-8 weeks before the fracture is really strong.

The crap thing about the knee fracture is that every time, and I do mean every time, you bend your knee, even just alittle bit, there are extreme forces at play.  Having a fracture means that there are opposing forces up and down your leg.  Your muscles are doing their best to tear the two pieces in half.  That's the main reason for the brace, so you can't bend.  In the initial stages, weight baring is a no-no but as the fracture heals, more weight can be put on the leg.

I understand your need to be back at work.  I'll face the same dilema myself.  In a perfect world we'd all just sit back, have everything taken care of for us and money wouldn't even come into it...yeah right.  I'm not sure about you, but I'm not a surgeon earning squillions and my weekly wage is the only thing between me and disaster.

Are you cleared to walk without a brace?  And are you still on crutches?  There's no shame in using the crutches until the day you really don;t need them.  Don't think of it as going backwards, it's just a helping hand on the days you need it.

Yes, you get odd sensations under the knee, ontop of the knee.  I have something best described as a bee-sting feeling.

You've probably modified the way you walk to try and compensate for the injury, that put abnormal pressures on your feet, ankle, hips, back and neck...welcome to referred pain.

The good news is that the human body is an incredible machine and it capable of healing, even in the worst of circumstances.  Everything you're describing sounds pretty normal.  Lots of people refer to the leg as a "noodle", it doesn't feel strong or capable and it's a very scary sensation.

Rest your leg as much as you can, whenever you can.  Take ice packs to work and leave them in the staff room fridge if you have one.

Write down any questions you think of in advance to take to your next appointment, that way you don't get distracted when something comes out of left field.
