What is it?? Knee Sprain, LCL ACL??? Help!
« on: October 08, 2008, 07:56:08 PM »
About 10 weeks ago I jumped...a small jump similar to that is hopscotch during a martial arts class. I felt and heard a "POP" on the outside of my knee. It hurt( like a burning) for about 5 -10 seconds and then I walked off the mat. I thought I needed to stretch??? So I did and went back out to do some advancing kicks. I put my weight on this (left leg) and DOWN I was on the floor and it hurt like heck for about 10 - 20 seconds. I got helped off the mat and immediately iced it for about 15 minutes. The ice pack was not that cold or fully frozen. I decided to call it a night and stood up an my knee wanted to give away. I caught it! I walked down the stairs to the car using the railing and my hubby's shoulder. I could walk on it, there was not much pain and no swelling! I got home and immediately took 4 ibuprofen and more ice and elevation in anticipation of swelling.I did the whole R I C E thing for a couple of days. . I was not in pain, just stiff and sore. I tried to stay off of it as much as i could. I  have 2 young kids who need care so, you know who thats goes. About 4 days later I even walked the county fair with just some discomfort but no pain.  I could go up and down stairs one at a time. I "babied" it and wore a brace for stability. I don't know if I needed it? It made me feel better.
Now I have an ache on the side of my knee that goes down the side of my leg and sometimes around my calf. My knee is sore at times. I have full ROM, but knee just feels "mushy" sometimes. Now my knee pops and locks when I go up and down stairs. I started back to Martial Arts last week and it was ground work. The getting up and down... it hurt. Squatting sometimes hurts. The day after that workout both of my knees ached horrible, but that was gone in a day or two.
I have not started down the road of MRI's etc. The trainers tell me RICE it is a sprain.....I just want some insight before I pay high deductibles etc. More than anything I WANT TO GET BACK TO CLASS! I hate sitting on the side and watching all the fun.  :'(
I would appreciate any info.

Hello busymomof2 from another busymomof 2! If I had to guess just based on my numerous knee issues, I would say quite possibly you tore your lateral meniscus. You don't have instability so it' probably not the ACL. Women are prone because of our Qangle or the way our hips are angled which puts more stress on the lateral parts of our knee.

I would bite the bullet honey and get the MRI only because at 10 weeks out you should be healed of a sprain. You have an injury that requires a specialist. The sooner you get it taken care of the sooner you'll be on the road to recovery and with having 2 kids you probablly don't want this to drag out.

Now, don't be suprised if the MRI turns up negative and you still have symptoms. That happened to me 3 times with 3 problems, nothing showed up right on the MRI (MRI not good at showing cartilage damage).

So you might be headed for a scope. Good news is I don't think it's really serious and nothing a simple scope couldn't fix. It's about 8-12 weeks realistically to recovery from meniscus surgery but it's way better than walking around for a year and nothing getting better.

Just look into it further so that you don't have to walk around suffering and I only say this because it's been 10 weeks. I'd have a wait and see if it was only 2 weeks. Keep us posted and all the best to you,
