Walking after Microfracture

This is my 2nd microfracture procedure and was cleared a week ago to bear weight on it after 6 weeks of NWB; start walking.  I have so much pain when walking.  And the funny thing is... everytime I am off my leg, like sitting down, and get back up to walk... my leg feels like the very first time I have walked on it in the last 6 weeks.  I keep thinking it's going to get better but each day is the same still.  I am going to PT and doing multiple exercises at home.  Also swimming.  I tell myself to be patient.  Give it time.  But I don't remember having this much pain or weakness last time I had this done.  Also, my knee is still very swollen.  I had 3 arthocentesis after my surgery.  Could this impact the results of my microfracture?  Has anyone else had this happen to them?  I am worried because I have to return to work on 8/11 and I am on my feet all day.  I'm not paniced yet.  Thanks for the help.

im actually 9 dayspost op on a cartilage replacement surgery and everytime i get up i feel the same way , i believe its because of the swelling and added gravity to the area . common i believe

What kind of replacement surgery did you have?  And you can walk right away after that type of surgery?  Was interested in knowing.  Thanks

it was a cartilage replacement behind the patella they drilled out half the patella and graphted a cadavers into it. i can walk with little pressure , no bending leg for 6 weeks

Hi there,

I had a microfracture repair back in October '07 (along with the removal of some meniscus that broke off and couldn't be repaired). i too was NWB for 6 weeks.  Are you using a cane to eventually get to FWB? Or are you trying to just walk and be full-weight-bearing without any sort of cane or brace?. Perhaps using one of those might help decrease the pain a bit?

I'm  a bit confused by the statement that you had cartilage replacement surgery. There is not yet research available for such a procedure as I asked my OS about it. He said that it would be 25-30 years down the road before they could replace cartilage. and then would only be done on children. If they could do this we would not all have knee replacements. Each time you have a problem with cartilage the surgery removes some until you end up with none in the end. WALAY!!Knee Repl;acement.

I LIVE in chicago theres only 4 specialists that do it here , its called Patellar osteochondral allograft , its very new and also was founded here in chicago by dr. cole, i opted to do this instead of a microfracture, the microfracture wich is pretty much a blood clot was only 30 percent for me were as the cartilage replacement from a cadaver was 90 percent
