PRP available in the UK? Runners success?
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:07:40 AM »
I have been diagnosed with mild/moderate lateral compartment cartilage degenertion. Im a long distance runner. I cant run at the moment as it feels like jarring. Someone suggested stem cell PRP injections. I can only see this available in the USA....or is there any UK facilities?
Has anyone experienced PRP treatment in the sense of getting back into running?

Google brings up a few places, no idea if anyone on this site has ever had it in the UK (have you tried a search, I seem to recall some discussion around these parts?)

http://www.ralphrogers.co.uk/platelet_rich_plasma.html

http://www.hipkneespecialist.co.uk/prp-injections.html

It certainly won't be available on the NHS

Have you considered a hyaluronic acid injection like Synvisc, Euflexaa, Durolane?  Again, probably have to pay for it

Also, do you know why you have the wear in just one compartment, has your alignment been checked?

Good luck :)

2nd scope on 16/12/10
RK arthroscopy on 5/2/15
Lateral meniscus trim, excision of hoffa's fat pad, chondral stabilisation
LK scope 10.1.19 medial menisectomy, trochlea microfracture, general tidy up

Thanks Vickster

Im pretty new to all the terms...so didnt really understand the mri results that well. One compartment?......I know the wear is on the outerside of the right knee where I am missing meniscus due to operations earlier in my life. Ive never had my gait checked, but i assumed it was from the lack of space between the joints and the 300 marathons Ive done in the last 10 years. Im getting an update visit soon with a physio present.

Ah, the missing meniscus will probably be the cause I guess and all that running (nutter  :P ).  Knee has 3 main compartments, lateral on outside, medial on inside and the patello-femoral in the middle (very technical  ;D )

I have lateral tattiness too, a trauma, missing bit of meniscus (about 20%) and knock knees - not a great combination but all good at the mo

Good luck for when you see the doc :)
