Hi!

My OS doesn't feel that standard procedures in knee cartilage replacement will offer me much benefit, but is referring me to an OS who does it for a second opinion. Having had 2 open knee surgeries in less than 6 months time, I am personally more interested in less invasive procedures via injection, if possible. If anyone is aware of surgeons doing regenexx/stem cell injections in Michigan and surrounding areas now, I would greatly appreciate input.

I imagine that sort of information can be found on their website. But I wouldn't expect your insurance company to pay for it.

Hi!

Thanks for your post. I did try the website, but was unable to find links to other docs who offer it. It maybe just the one (Dr. Centreno) who is poineering it. I've known others to travel out of the country to see specific docs for stemcell procedures. Fortunately, one person had great success as she was a quad and was regaining functioning. Wonderful!!

My auto insurance is paying because it was an accident that caused my injury. They offer life long benefits for whatever neccessary treatments the future holds. So, I would probably need to ask them, but if it will save me from a TKR it's worth a shot either way. They would pay for cartilage repair, though. Equally expensive?

Thanks: Heather

Regenexx is only doing their  system in Denver for the moment. I 've spoke at lenght with them.  I'm probably going  to have the procedure myself in September /  October. They are opening a center in Florida in September too. Google Dr Joe Maroon & his story of his repair of his left knee in the Tribune Review of Pittsburg. It makes for great reading. Apparently he was so impressed with what they did for him he did his own press release praising Dr Centano & his staff.

Hey!

Thanks alot! I have to checkout the story. Good luck in having this procedure youreself. Please post back and let us know if you have some success. I would only hope that it would eventually be available nationwide to help any others, as well. Amazing science!

Thanks I'll check that out, too. Didn't you tube would have knee stuff. WOW! Are they already doing a similar procedure in Florida? One of my PT aides told me that her brother had it done 2 years ago there. Curious!  ??? She said he had to pay out of pocket because it's still experimental.

Believev:

Yes, she said her brother had ALOT of relief with having it done and it was successful. Are you considering it? After several more opinions have come into play since I've started his post, it seems that the only 2 options I have are a patellectomy or a PFJR, though. I've been having trouble with my other knee for about 6 months now... probably because I hit that one in the accident, too It's also been overly busy in compensating for the injured one, as well. So, I still may be a candidate for it sometime down the road, never know.  ;) Amazing technology, isn't it?

Heather, yes I am definately considering it.  I'm conisdering it so much, Dec 2nd I'm getting a diagnostic scope done to see exactly where the damage is.  Mri's dont give my doctors any read on my knee.THere is damage in there and the doctor agreed to go in and tell me what and where.  Then I will go to regenexx and see fi they can target this area.

I am in touch with a few people who have either done it, or are currently dcone it. I haven't heard a bad thing yet, so far so good.
I do hope if you do go forward you get some relief.  And I hope it long lasting.

For me, its either a microfracture, oats or aci proceudre or try this first.  So I"d prefer to have to downtime.
We're going to find out.

Read the other postings and to the website.

I have not heard anything bad. The only thing wrong is it fails which is not as bad as having a surgery that hurt for a long time and you end up worst and then year after year have to have another one to correct the previous one.

Read the postings and the history of some of the kneegeeks.

Spend the time to research everything.

FYI,

For those of you that are interested in the Regenexx procedure.  They are still doing the stem cell/same day procedure, but not the 3-4 week culture of the stem cells.  What they are doing right now, is isolating them, then reinjecting the same day.  The isolation technique is done in thier lab, and they are the only ones who do this right now.  It increases the stem cells from thousands to millions, from what the office girl said.

For the remaining part of 2010, if you schedule the procedure, you will get it for $3,000.  After January, though, the price will go up to $4,000 per treatment!

I just spoke with a girl in the office there, and was asking her all kinds of questions.

Dr. Brian Shiple from Springfield, PA does stem cell injections as well.  He is very cutting edge, and I have recieved PRP and soon will be getting stem cell treatment from him this coming year.

He is amazingly smart, and my mom went to see him... Her hair had been falling out, she has a thyroid problem among many other issues, and she finally saw Dr. SHiple, per my requests.  He ordered her a full set of blood work to test her hormones, etc. and everything.  We came to find out she was lacking a ton of hormones, as well as some major Vit. D. and both of her thyroid levels were low.  Her regular Dr. was only treating her with synthroid, which does not cover both thryroid problems, only the one.  So, thank God, after ten years, Dr. Shiple ordered the right tests for her, on her first visit with him.

He's great, and I highly recommend him for knees and hips, or any joint issues for that matter.

I know of a Dr Dennis Lox in the Tampa Bay Florida area who does this procedure for a variety of problems/disorders and has had very good results. I would recommend him. Google him for his website and info. Good luck!  :)
