Help, question about bowleg and osteotomy.
« on: July 10, 2008, 04:34:22 AM »
i am 20 years old and i am bowlegged. but i am not born with bowed legs, so my legs must have become bowed over the years. i played alot of sports but i have never hurt my knee. I've seen an orthopaedic and i was told there is no arthritis on both knees. also there is no significant pain on the knees. So what could be the cause of my legs becoming bowed? anyone have a similar situation?

Does the doctor have any speculations? they should also test you for muscle imbalances, strengths, weaknesses. Also it depends where the legs are bowed.  In addition to point in time xrays, I would also consider having some pictures taken and put in your medical file in case your condition worsens so you will have a baseline. I would imagine they would try to rule out other things like some types of bone disease or something like that.
It could be related to growth. You are possibly still growing.
I have bow legs, however I was born with mine due to mal-alignment. My 85 year old father however, has developed them more over time with arthritis.
The risk as you know is abnormal pressure, wear, tear on other parts of the body.  Would keep seeking answers. Best wishes.

I dont know a lot about bow-leggedness, but I do know that it can be cause by a vitamin deficiency as a child. I think its B and D vitamins. If theres not enough of them in your diet as a kid, you develope bow leggedness.  Could be a possibility since you were not born that way.

Hello,

Here you could look at video that describes a patient's experience (UK) regarding bow legs correction treatment:
