Hello Everyone - Advice Appreciated
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:09:49 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am waiting for a final consultancy on a possible torn medial meniscus.  Unfortunately my knee has locked in flexion and has become slightly inflamed.

Does anyone have any tips for maipulating knees out of locking?  I have managed on several occassions before this one to unlock my knee, but this time I have not had success.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Phillip

You should do an emergency visit with your knee if that doesn't get unstucked.
I hope you're ok now.
Surgery 6 times left knee torn meniscus, RSDS,chondromalacia, nervdamage cause constant nervpain, chronic inflamm.
Spinaldamage wheeler 100%.
Right knee damaged aug-06, use brace surgery 4/9-07.LCL tear.

Phillip - try this GENTLY!!!

Manipulate your leg as straight as you can get it (perhaps lie down on your back on the bed or floor). Relax your quads completely - let your leg go floppy. Gently push down (or have someone else do it), a couple of inches above your kneecap. It may snap back into place.

Ive just had a scope and he took out a badly torn piece of medial meniscus - it was causing locking, a sense of diclocation, subluxing etc... and the above method is how I always unlocked it. The key is to let the muscles go floppy - otherwise they wont let you release it.

Inflammation may be preventing you unlocking it also - if no joy do go to the emergency room.

I was able to unlock my knee at will back when I had a torn meniscus. But one day it locked up and it wouldn't unlock. That's when I decided it was time for surgery.

O.k.

Thanks, its great to hear everyone's stories.

I'm going to give it one last try to unlock it.

But I get the feeling that this is the one where it won't unlock.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on. Good luck with it - it needs to be seen to one way or another but hopefully you'll be able to unlock it for now til the docs get at it.

So, 6 weeks have passed and my right knee is still locked in flexion.
I have been walking on it and it has generally been o.k, but I'm looking froward to the day when I can fully extend the leg.

I have my arthoscopy set for the end of the month (after much time spent on telephones arranging a referral) and plan to begin a regime soon afterwards to build strength back up in both legs so that I can do something fun again.

My Father (55) had similar operations at about the same age and is now running into problems with arthritis and loose bodies.  I guess I've got thirty years to get the most out of my legs...lets hope someone will have come up with something to treat these kind of things effectively by 2040.

All the best to everyone for your support.
P.

Hi Phillip,
Glad you are booked in - it will be a nice feeling to get 'unlocked' :)
I am now 7 weeks since my scope and doing great, depending on what the OS finds and fixes in there recovery should not be too hard for you. The fact you can walk on it locked means you are at least preserving some muscle so thats great!
Hope all is well and you dont have too much pain.
