What is Patella Mobes?
« on: April 30, 2008, 02:23:18 AM »
I gather it is a certain type of physical therapy.  Please someone describe it....I see my therapist tomorrow and would like to ask him if he is doing it.  Thank you.

It's not much fun and it weirds me out, but it does help keep adhesions from forming under the kneecap.  What usually happens is you sit with the leg straight and the therapist moves the kneecap side to side and kind of rocks the kneecap back and forth.  I never really found it terribly painful, it just feels really weird to me.  I did these myself after my last three scopes (once the PT showed me how).

'05 rt knee scope (clean up)
7/5/07 - scope, LR left, right clean

Hi Starpolisher

Looks like our resident "experts" a busy this evening. See the link for Part 2 of Dirk Kokmeyer's Arthrofibrosis Rehab Tutorial that discusses how to do patella mobs. I recommend printing this out and taking it to your therapist.

Sharon .... thanks so much for the link.   I'll print it out.  I have felt him move something in my knee but not sure if it's the same thing.   Thank you to everyone who is helping!

they are a really really important thing to have done at pt. my pt spends a good ten or fifteen minutes on those.  it isn't painful just uncomfortable.  my knee is numb and when he does those i actually get sick to my stomach.  they do make a world of difference so you gotta just bite the bulllet and let them do it.
beauty always comes from within.  the outside doesn't matter.

I have never had this done before by any therapist.....after 3 operations for knee replacement, removal of scar tissue, one revision (Feb 7 of this year).  I copied it and sent a link to my surgeon and will bring to my physical therapist.  My 4th operation (other revision) is May 30 ....in a month. I have been so horribly depressed because I'm on strong pain meds, had so much surgery and the scar tissue keeps coming back.  I have had 6 months of very grueling physical therapy each time.

I am giving up hope.  Stopping my job has been so terribly hard for me.  I find I just have been crying so much and feel I will never regain my mobility.  I have a cpm I do at home religiously, everyday, for hours.  I do all the exercises they gave me.

Where did you get this physical therapy movement from?   Is this from the Doctors in the Midwest who specialize in arthrofibrosis. I need help desperately.

Whoever put Dr. Sculco's name down for Special Surgery in NYC should remove it.  I go there and he refuses to see anyone who has had a TKR done by anyone else....including the surgeons at the same hospital.  I have tried to get in to see him.  I have Dr. Edwin Su there who specializes in knees and is considered on of the best surgeons there.  He did have my blood evaluated at the only lab in the U.S.  that does it .... checks our blood for allergies to the implants.  Mine came back showing high sensitivity to the cement and therefore I am having the revisions.  Maybe 2 days of rain made my new knee feel as stiff as my old knee but I just felt it was coming back and the nightmare would continue.  If I didn't have a son (who has been sick for over 6 years), I think I would have swallowed a bunch of pills.  I see a psychiatrist.  I will be seeing a therapist.  There must be others like me who feel this way.  I need hope to get through these operations. Maybe my therapist can do these patella mobes.....if he says he doesn't know how, what then?  Are they a must for recovery from arthrofibrosis.  So far he has been the best therapist of anyone but it's grueling and I have read regular therapy is bad for us.  I am so confused.  I don't know where to turn for help.  I will email my surgeon again if I need a special type of physical therapy.  all this surgery and all the drugs I'm on......what good is it all?  I was so hopeful the allergy was the answer.  Maybe the 2 days of rain just caused the stiffening.   :'(

Patella mobes are a standard PT exercise, nothing "specialized" about it. I've had them done after every knee surgery I've had...but still ended up with scar tissue anyway. They are not something the AF "specialists" developed.

The feeling of depression is common.  A large amount of surgery, pain meds and long rounds of therapy can get anyone down.  I know I sure have those why the heck should I bother days too.  The thing that worked best for me was to take things in short incriments.  I would give my self an hour and say let's just get through this hour.  It helped me out.  I see from your post that they found you are senstive to the cement.  It could be a contributing factor.  Weather plays havoc with my knees too, so that could have been one more thing.  Keep up your home therapy too it really makes a difference.  Take care.

Thank you, Milly!  I appreciate your reassurance and kind words.   :)  I had forgotten my surgeon told me this period between the 2 revisions would be painful as my new knee keeps getting straighter and the weight is increasing on that one leg.  I'm even getting ingrown toenails.  The pressure is digging into my toe.

You are most welcome. It gets hard to see the light when you are looking down in the dark!  Unfortunatly most major knee surgeries are long haul things.  My mom used to put a soap called Physohex (or something like that) in warm water and soak my foot when my nails started to do that.  I think epsom salts and warm water works too.  I'm not sure but I think it draws them out or something.  If nothing else, pretend it's a spa day. ;)

Hi Star;
Having failed knee replacements can play hell on ones mind, body and in my case, it has been grueling on my family also. I've had 3 knee replacement surgeries on my right knee in the last year. Now I have 75 flexion and nothing more can be done because my 1st surgeon miscut my tibia. My bones are so unstable I will never be able to have another revision, which means that I am stuck dragging this lump around while I hobble on crutches.
I figured that if this was it, I was going to have to live with it until it either breaks, or something more drastic happens and I tossed my pain meds and went cold turkey. The pain meds were driving me crazy and I was determined to get part of my life back. I still have pain in my leg, but my mind is clear and I'm back to being able to enjoy my family and to me that was the main concern. I'm on crutches 24/7 and part of that time I'm in a wheelchair. I kept telling myself that my fmaily needed me, but all along it was I who needed them.
You have to take it a little at a time, like Milly said, a couple hours and a couple more. Good luck, and know that there are a lot of good people on this site to  here when you need to vent or just need a good cry.
