Wow!
I'm exhausted reading it all but it sounds great and I reckon you deserve a compliment  :)
You sound really positive too which is great to hear.
I'm so pleased for you about all your progress. Very impressive and no doubt deserved!
(mind you, I'll quietly admit that I'm having trouble relating to extension and flexion figures ... the numbers don't mean much to me at this point in the game. Not for long though, I'm sure)

I really liked your secret weapon too and have made a mental note to keep a reasonable supply of adult beverages handy  ;D

You'll be so pleased to be off the crutches soon too.
All the best!

It's a goniometer (what's a goni?) but I like "extendometer" or "measuring thingie" better.  Ha!  Ha!  I think everyone should be given one for free when they have their surgeries.   Great job on the numbers BSG.

Thanks Everyone, it is nice to finally be moving forward.  My goal now is to not lose anything if I can help it.

Ski Bunny - it looks like you have already had the introduction to knee surgery and recovery yourself.  When is your ACLr?

PT #11

Well, I got there on one crutch today, I spent alot of time this week walking around the house w/o them and I have to say it feels pretty good.  Pre-op I could feel the instability in the knee and it always felt like I was going to fall, now I can just feel the weakness in my quads.  I don't think I am limping too bad, mostly the knee is stiff and causes the pegleg.

So, today added a new thing.  Not sure what its called but it's a machine with a low pulley and we put the strap around my injured (she told me to stop calling it "bad") leg and I did standing SLR in all quadrants.  The tough part was when I switched to my non-injured (read: good) leg and I had to balance on the - bad (easier to type) one.  After awhile it got easier and I guess thats the goal of this whole thing.

Nowadays since the incision is pretty much healed and the strips are beginning to fall off she spends time massaging the area, boy does that not feel good  :o  I know it has to be done to break up the scar tissue and adhesions but man.....so I do this at home in the evenings while watching the tube.

We measured and today it was -5, 110  PT was actually pretty happy with that but I am still hoping to get to 120 by Friday.  I find I have trouble controlling my hammies now so off to work on those.

Oh yeah.......she told me to leave the crutch at home Friday...... :-\

Congrats on the walking BSG!! Are you finding that your graft site feels tight or weird when you walk or flex?
Good luck on getting to 120, I know you can do it!! :D

Hi BSG,
yes, I've had the "introduction" ... and like the approach. :)
I'm scheduled next weekend. Means another week of ... pre-op nerves for me!

Your scar tissue post reminded me of some advice I got recently from an acquaintance - a chiropractor & knee specialist: He told me to invest in a laser pointer (635 intensity ... whatever that means) and point it in a circular fashion over the scar tissue. He said to do it several times a day for at least 10 - 15 seconds each time and said that it tremendously helps scar tissue to heal.
Anybody heard about that??

What do you reckon ... worth a try?

BSG - I do those SLR type things with the pulley as well.  They do feel odd!  I haven't done the SLR's while balancing on the right knee yet (surgery knee).  I also got the lecture that if you call it "bad" then you will think it's bad and you will have a mental block.  I guess I really can't say good knee/bad knee anymore.  They are both kind of pains in my @**!

Hey Ski Bunny - I'll ask about the laser pointer.  I had arthroscopic surg on my elbow a few years ago and the 2 little insertion points developed knots of scar tissue.  I remember I used to massage them pretty much whenever I thought of it and I'd think they were never going to go away.  Well, it's been 3.5 years now and I can't even find the scars let alone the knots, they are all gone.

BNL - talk about the mental block, I find that now that my knee is stable it's more in my brain that I have the trouble believing I can do it.  Just this afternoon I got up and walked into the LR with my coffee and the paper and sat down, after awhile I needed a refill and I was like "where's my sticks, OMG I can't get into the kitchen w/o them."  Silly I know but it's funny how conditioned one can become if you aren't careful.

Hi BSG, glad to hear you're starting to ditch the "sticks".  Sounds like you're doing well.

Skibunny, That laser pointer sounds like a new kind of torture we can add to the list.  Does it feel like it's burning when you do it or is it such a low intensity you don't really feel it?

Well done BSG. Loads of progress and lots of new things to try.

Laser pointer sounds like a toy from James Bond movie where he says "Do you expect me to beg for mercy?" and the baddie says "No Mr Bond, I expect you to die"....and thats without any meds on my behalf.

Have a great weekend BSG.  ;D

Hi All -

I had my AClr done 10  years ago. A friend of mine is a ciropractor and he did my rehab for me. He told me to use the laser pointer and use Gota Kula (herbal supplement). I took the capsules of Gota Kula and broke them open to create a paste. Applied the paste on the scar. My scars healed up really good.

Oh, T I LOVE James Bond especially that particular quote - Sean Connery and Roger Moore tho' not the newer ones.  (I am dating myself)  I quoted the Matrix quote from Bruce to the PT the other day and they cracked up.  She came in and was quoting me lines so I guess we are onto something.

Well, today is end of week 4 PT session #12

I am happy to report that the last of the April ACLrs are OFF CRUTCHES!!!!!!!!   :D  It still feels a little funny but it is good to be free of them I must say.      AND.....today on the bike I got all the way around the first try!!!!  I forgot to ask about the laser thing but I can't see how it would hurt anything.

So today was a tag team event at the PT, my regular PT and the Director took turns, Fridays are slow there.  I really like my regular PT but sometimes I like to see someone different and have their take on things.

I did the regular exercises and the PT did some knee CPR, we determined that I do get to 0 passively but of course the point is for me to get it using my own muscles not theirs.  We did some hell slides and flexion work as well.

Since today was the big walking day they took alot of time making sure I was actually walking and not faking something that was propeling me forward.  They gave me 2 new exercieses to do:

One is stand with left leg forward and lean like you are going to take a step without actually stepping forward - this is to get a sense of the weight shift

Two, was to assume the above position with the right leg forward and lift my left leg up like I was going to take a step - really exagerate it to get the feel of the walking motion and not just letting my leg swing forward.

Then I motored around the clinic while they watched - funny how self-conscious I get when I know someone is watching me walk.

The grand finale involved the electro stim with ice pack to try and get the swelling down.  Only medical people would think to electric shock something to get it to shrink.......

I managed to dodge the measuring thingie  ;) today - another victory....

I hope everyone has a good weekend and for all you Moms out there Happy Mothers Day!!
