I am so happy I found this site!  Its midnight and I had surgery at 6pm.  I cant decide to take the vicodin or just pass.  I'm feeling the same pre-op and I've never taken vicodin and I'm scared!  Are the pain meds still doing their job??  Thanks!!!!

Hi Ryan,
My suggestion is that you take the pain meds.  At least for the first few days post-op it is better to stay on top of the pain meds rather than wait until you are in really bad pain and then try to take the meds.  If you wait until you are in really bad pain, then it is harder to control the pain.  It is possible that your surgeon may have injected some medicine into your knee at the end of your surgery that will help with pain control and that medicine may wear off as early as 6 hours after surgery and then the pain may get worse.  I've taken Vicodin before and it is nothing to be afraid of.  It may make you feel a little dizzy and loopy and could upset your stomach a bit.  If you do take it, make sure that you take it with food to prevent it from upsetting your stomach.  I've found that feeling a little out of it for awhile outweighs being in pain.  Good luck to you as you recover!!!!

Thanks!!  All I've eaten are a few crackers, is this enough??  I have a real touchy stomach.  Thats why I'm nervous to take the vicodin.  I don't want to add throwing up to my list of worries...

Still waiting to see if the crackers are enough for the vicodin - anyone please respond!  The internet has info for both sides.

I would try and take some more crackers or some toast then take the vicodin. My stomach can be sensitive too but I found when I'm in a lot of pain, the meds don't make me as naseous.
It is also a good suggestion to call the doc and ask - you don't want the pain to get ahead of you. Maybe they will at least say to take something less strong being better than nothing.
Good luck

Hi,

After my surgery, I took 1/2  a gravol with my pain meds when I wasn't going to be eating (before bed) and found this helpful. I have weak tummy and never got sick once. After a couple of days you can start to decrease dose as tolerated or swap for ibuprofen. Hope you are ok.

You may need to force yourself to eat a handful of crackers or a piece of toast before taking the meds.  I had the same surgery almost two years ago and found that taking the meds on time prevented more horrid pain later.  It was a difficult time, but after the first several days, I took them only when I needed them. I picked them back up 12 weeks later when I began PT.  Again staying on top of the pain is important to good recovery.

If you haven't already done so, you should post under the specialist section under bone breaks around the knee.  That is where most of us with patella fracture keep up to date with each other.  You will find how to handle post surgery, be able to ask for exercises etc.  BTW, whenever in doubt, contact your OS.
