Top of the knee cap hurts
« on: March 31, 2008, 02:38:40 PM »
hi guys im new here and thought i'd ask anyone whos willing to provide advice
i started basically squatting heavy about 3-4 months ago and about 2 months ago i noticed some pain right at the top of my kneecaps.

it hurts when i squat down but not extreme sharp pain
its really wierd as once ive warmed up i can pretty much squat normally with weights and i dont feel a thing, but after i cool down i feel the pain in the top of the knee cap.
ive never had kneecap problems in the past before, im pretty healthly and in my mid 20s

i have recently stopped squatting such heavy poundage but the pain is still there on a daily basis.

any advice much appreciated.
thanks

I would stop squatting totally. Do that for a while and maybe try some over counter antiinflammatories and see if that helps. Squatting and especially with weights can be heavy on knees.

Have you seen anyone for your knee..I mean doc ? Is this physio just someone at the gym or someone you see for your knee ? There are other ways to strenghten the muscles. If squatting makes you hurt more you shouldn't do that.

I bet this is an overuse injury...but as I am no doc, I can't diagnos you.
What does the phys say ? A check up by an OS is never wrong.

squatting won't isolate the vmo, your main quads will take over most of the exercise.

it may be that you need to stretch your hamstrings and quads as if you've suddenly started squatting heavy the muscles will contract and pull the cap.  at least that's what's happened to me and every time i get a twinge and then stretch you can feel it pull the kneecap back.

then again, the knee is so complicated the best thing is to see an OS if you're still having problems.  i wo9uld say see a physio and try the stretching but it seems your physio isn't quite with it with regards to the vmo which requires very strict exercises to isolate it.

ok i saw the physio today (another one) for a 2nd opinion and he said it was a biomechanical issue,i have got patellofemoral syndrome
my right leg is knocked kneeed and my my feet are a bit flat so he  prescribed me some foot arches

anyone suffer from this before? how long does this usually take before i can get back to heavy squatting?

If the foot arches help, then you can probably go back as soon as the pain goes away.  If that isn't the proper solution, you still may have problems.  If you get arches, I would highly suggest going to a podiatrist to get custom orthotics.  Custom orthotics can give you the support that you need and not a generic support like store bought arches.  I hope that it helps!

Kneeproblems and heavy squatting might not be something that belongs together.
I would be careful with the knees and let them get back to painfree before doing ANY squatting. Many people doesn't realize that knees are meant to hold as long as possible.
