Hey Yall
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:31:46 PM »
Hey everyone,

I havent been on this site for a long time. I really missed everyone!!!!  :) Well, I am now playing softball, Varsity Starting 1st Base, but I can barely run. They put a pinch runner in for me. My left knee is starting to hurt more like it used to. I do some exercises that they gave me at home. Now, I am really concerned; my right knee is starting to hurt like my left one and that SUX!!!! I have terrible shin splints when I walk and run, and my ankles and hips are starting to hurt when I run. I still try my best in softball. I am playing because I want/need a scholarship to college. The PT people said that my patellas are high and sit on the outside of the grove. I guess that the right one starting to hurt was only a matter of time.

Any suggestions?? Pain relief, other than motrin/ibuprofen, cuz it doesnt work???

Thanks so much,
Jak

Hi Jak,
you are great the way you pop back to visit us every so often - cos you wonder what becomes of people who dont post for a while you know?

sorry to hear youre still having the knee troubles - whats the story with you medically now - are you just seeing PT or do you have an OS appointment pending to evaluate how PT has been going or what?

You might get someone here who has experienced similiar issues to you - you know yourself Im a dislocater so I havent any experience with what you describe.

Its still good to hear from you and I hope all is well in your life other than those darn knees.

Hey Tanya,

nice hearing from ya again!!
I am not in PT anymore, and I probably should go back to my doc sometime to see what he suggests, but nothing is planned right yet. I have a couple exercises that i am supposed to do every other day. you know how that goes. The best that I can explain it is that my kneecaps are high (patella alta), and they sit on the outside of the groove which causes the groove to damage the cartilage on the back of the patella (so chondromalacia). thats the best that i can describe what they told me at the pt place. i kinda wonder why the pt people could find out about that but all the other docs didnt see taht my patella moved around too much and that they "werent right?" oh well...ill find something to do.

thanks for replying,
ttyl,
jak

ps..its been snowing here!!!! ITS MARCH AND ITS SNOWING!!!!!

Jak,

You need to see an OS to diagnose the suspected patella alta.  That is something that can really only be confirmed with a diagnosis by an OS and usually requires a CT.

A knee specialist would be a good place to go from here...

Hi Brianne,

Nice to hear from you too. I will try to get an appointment with an OS. I just dont want to go back to my old OS, I think you remember my ordeal with him. If not, he told my mom that there was NOTHING wrong with me. (but apparently, hes wrong). At that time, I couldnt run AT ALL, and sometimes could barely walk. So, i will look into finding a new OS.

Thanks,
ttyl,
jak

Jak,
I would definitely go to an os soon. I have many of the same problems as you and then some. I have been to pt 3 times and seen 3 different family drs, 3 different pts and 3 os. The last one finally sent me for an mri and they found a lot of things going on. Since I have been doing the conservative treatment for about 5 years, they are most likely going to scope me now. They have also given me tramadol and mobic for the pain and swelling.
just remember to be aggressive about your treatment and to change drs if you need to!
I hope that helped some!

Triciababy88:
Thanks for writing. I have been to 3 or 4 different GPs, 2 OS's, pain management. Im 16 and have had knee pain for 8-9 years. My mri of my knee about 1 1/2 years ago was "perfect." My mom was getting in the way of getting treated because the docs were telling her taht there was nothing wrong, and she didnt know what else to do. I am in pain and she knew it, but we were running out of options. I recently torn my lateral gastroc and went to PT for it where they told me about the cause for my knee pain. Calf is okay now. I am trying to explore some more options, one at a time. thanks so much!!

thanks for writing too. Yeah, bad knees SUCK!!! :P Ive been looking for a good doc, and will continue. Its never a problem talking about your knee pain in someone elses thread. (at least i dont mind) thats the point of the website. i used to play basketball but soon discovered, knees, they dont like it. i also used to play hockey, a goalie. the ONLY girl in the league and i won the best goalie award at the end of the season out of 4 other boys. It was fun, but i dont think that my knee would like me very much if i tried to play again. write soon, hope your knee gets better, adn have fun on the site. thanks

Jak,

When searching for a Doctor, please remember that a knee specialist is not someone that you will find all the time.  You may need to go out of your area to see the right specialist, but this makes a huge difference and is well worth any hassles.  This is something you may want to talk to your mom about.  My OS is three hours away, but thats a small price to pay for finally finding someone who could offer a solution to my knee problems.  the "Knee Surgeons" section of Knee Guru might be a good place for you to start.  Also, when calling an OS's office, you or your mom can ask if that surgeon has experience in treating your type of problem.  Finding the right Doctor is important.

My mom and i decided that i would diligently follow my knee exercises for like four weeks or so, and if i am stil having pain and trouble, then we would go to a knee place/clinic, that i heard was pretty good to try to get a diagnosis/treatment.
