PAIN - ACL Tear Vs Rupture???
« on: March 14, 2008, 07:36:51 PM »
Can anyone tell me the difference between a partial tear and full rupture of the ACL with regard to:
Pain
Swelling
Movement (or lack of?)

within the first week after injury occurring?

Thanks

I tore mine completely in half. I had a lot of pain at the time but very little swelling and I was walking within a week. In fact, after the first injury I got up and walked  home.

In general there is not a lot of difference in the symptoms between a partial tear and a rupture.  However, with a smaller percentage tear there may not be as much swelling since the blood supply to the ligament may still be intact.
1999 LR, 2002 ACL/PLC recon, reversal of LR, 2004 ACL revision, 2006 Car accident torn PCL and small fractures resulting in bone chips in my knee.  Torn MCL 3 times.  Wicked screws under IT band and Pes Anserine.  June 2008-Hip Arthroscopy.

HI,

I was walking around with a full ACL rupture.  MRI should partial tear , Orthopedic MD put me in PT 4 a year.  I needed surgery 4 repair.  A full tear doesn't heal on its own without surgery.  My swelling was minimal .  I could bear full weight with some degree of pain.  Definetly have Your knee checked out!!

GOOD LUCK,

1995 Patella Femoral Syndrome Diagnosed/Blown ACL &PCL- Had surgery plus Lateral Release
1997 Multiple Dislocations/ Cartilage torn /Arthroscopic repair for cartilage defect
2002 Blown out aCL again playing soccer/new cadeavor placed
2008 MPFL Repaired open surgery-6 month rehab
upcoming surgery!

I had a complete tear. Serious initial pain but it could have been from the other injuries at the time. Lots of swelling by the next day & for a long time thereafter...Ellie
April, 2005 - ACL rupture, medial meniscus tear within posterior horn to articular surface, abnormal signal within lateral meniscus, partial tear MCL, bone contusions tibia/fibula, Baker's cyst.
No repairs.
