New to board - advice on knee pain please!
« on: February 03, 2008, 03:53:16 PM »

I've been suffering from pain in my right knee and leg for just over 4 years and Iím 35
now. When itís really bad, my leg is stiff & virtually impossible to move without being
painful. Iíve seen   various specialists, including orthopaedic consultants  and
physiotherapists. The general diagnosis seems to be weak muscles although a podiatrist
also thought that I may have patella femoral syndrome. When I walk, my leg
tends to twist in ways it shouldnít.

Up to now, I have tried to manage the pain through a combination of exercise (mainly leg elevation to strengthen the quads + a little walking) and  4 paracetamols a day, every 6 hours. One of these is taken in the middle of the night as I canít stay in bed for more than about 4 hours without getting the pain. Iíd like to come off the tablets completely. I have also been advised to take up swimming.

The pain has affected my social life in that I donít go out as much as I used to.

In recent days, the pain has got worse so Iím getting an appointment with the orthopaedic consultant again to see if anything has happened to the knee/leg recently. Has anyone else had experience of pain like this and how did they manage?

oooh i too am an advocate for swimmin. get a kick board and just kick away back and forth in the pool. also do step ups in the pool. run in the water  high step walking, etc. wsim therapy got me walking again when my oS and orthopedic dr  and PT were having trouble getting me walking again. i was advised  by PT who tried every treatment under the sun to go the pool...within a couple months i was walking..started off on 2 crutches, went to one, went to my cane...right before my last surgery i was walking free without support of anykind but a horrible limp but at least i was walking  so it was definite progress!!! i gotta get back soon thought becuase my quad has wasted to  nothing since this last grabbing my kickboard n heading back very soon!!!

Yes, it sort of does sound like the muscles around the knee, not just quads and hammies that are weak.  It sounds like you have a lot of instability.  Can you get a second opinion from another OS?

Swimming would be great!  Just be careful to not kick too hard as you don't want to cause yourself pain.  I think the water-walking is great...most pools here have these belts you can wear with foam on them that keep you afloat at the right height for water-walking in the deep end of a pool.  It is great exercise and works more muscles than you do on land.  You will also work harder since water relieves the pressure of your own body weight.  Therapy pools, if you can find one near you, like in a rehab hospital, have these platforms that you stand on, with a handrail, that lower you into the water, so you do not even have to climb a ladder into the pool.

Best of luck to you and keep pressing on till you find an answer to your problems; you deserve a good, normal life!

Take care,

Thanks for the replies. I'm still new to some of the language on here and wondered if you could explain. Does OS mean osteopath or something else? Is pt some sort of therapist? What's wsim therapy?
