I am finally home again!  10 days at my parents can be rough, but they helped me soooooooooo much! I am sooooo grateful for all they did for me.  It was different on Wednesday when my dad got home, but he controlled himself Thursday and today.

I am far beyond where I should be 10 days out and doing great! Just surgery soreness now and again....still doing CPM and using my GameReady ice machine, but not needing it all as much. I broke out the ice packs today.  The ice machine is too hard for me to fill by myself, so I prefer the packs now.

My cat and birds are happy to see me...Jazzy has been following me like crazy!!  Aury and Marshall are just happy to be home and have freedom!

It took a while to set up things at my house so that I don't have to get up too often, but I am happy now. Dogs in my lap, cat at my head, and a warm blanket :)  I will update better later!

Hi Farrah,

Thats what parents are there for to help out their kids when they are in need and spent around 10 days at my mums house after my scope on my right knee. Keep iceing the knee you do not want to have any scar tissue building up that can lead to AF, thats hard to put right again.

Its nice to go back home if you have pets to go back to as they great company.

Hey KNEEgeeks, take this: Only 3wks post op Fulkerson Osteotomy, off crutches and down to cane, ROM 130, and now doing light weight bearing exercises at PT!!!  I honestly can walk without crutches, but they don't want me to push myself too much until the bone has healed more. OS says 10-14 days of cane use before I am down to nothing!!!

For those that knew what I went through in the first surgery 3yrs ago, they know that those stats are AWESOME!!! Things couldn't be better with this surgery....as my PT says; I am flying through it.  I can't wait to be done with it and move on with more activities in my life.  My OS thinks I am past the time where I can get RSD! I still have a long numb area which scares me, but I am thinking positively.

In the meantime, my pain doctor has discussed a pain pump with me for all of my RSD and back pain. The pump would be surgically implanted just as the SCS implant.  I would be getting a lot less meds in my body since it disperses the morphine directly to the painful areas.  I would only have to see my pain doctor every 4-6mos for a check up and possible med refills in the pump.  Since it is known that I will be on pain meds forever, this is the best option to take away all of the oral meds.  My knee has to heal 100% before we talk more about it.  The pump would hopefully be the last surgery of my young life (thru 30s)!

Well time for me to get ready for my psychologist appt.  I hope everyone else is doing well!

At PT yesterday, my PT and OS let me get off my cane about 90% of the time!! I am 4wks post op! My OS told me he couldn't wait until he talked to the neurologist that advised him on my surgical treatment to prevent RSD. We all are assuming I am over the hump of potentially getting it in this leg!!!  I agree!

As for post op pain, swelling, ROM, etc.  I still have soreness and swelling.  I started doing mini squats last week which were fine.  For some reason this week, my knee was very sore and it was difficult to go as deep as I did last time. I imagine it will be like that for another 1-2 weeks (up and down).  As for ROM, I have had full ROM for 1.5-2wks.  ROM was easy for me to get back last time, so I assumed it would be like that again this time...and thankfully I was right.  I see people suffering at PT when the PT has to force them to progress by pushing on them some.  Our PT facility has an extensionator to help until you have full ROM.  I think I did the extensionator 3-4times before full ROM.  I am riding the bike perfectly for my warm ups.  Next step is my enemy.........leg press!!  Even before my first Fulkerson, I hated it.  It has always been a painful exercise for me and now a nightmare.  My PT said I don't have to do it on my bad leg (RSD leg) and can just do it one-legged at a very low weight.  I agreed to that and will do it on Thursday for the first time.   ::) :-\

As for walking, I have actually been "cheating" for a while now (walking w/out my cane).  So I knew when they had me walk without it yesterday that I would do well.  My knee still gives out now and again which is expected.  I just have to use my cane when I know I will be on my feet for a while.  I used it to get up the 3 steps to my counselor's office today and then held it when I walked the rest of the time.  I bet people thought I was weird!!  Haha!  ;D

Sad news though....even though Matt and I are divorced now, I still had a close bond with his grandmother's on both sides of his families.  Well last week, they both passed away!!!  Grandmama (from SC on his mom's side) died of cancer.  Just 6 mos ago she was fine!  His family was angry with me the way my family is angry at him since our separation.  So they didn't allow me to be a part of anything...I wasn't even allowed to know when she passed away!!  I would have dropped anything to say goodbye to her and go to her funeral services :(  :'( :'( :'(  That situation made her death even harder for me.  As for his other grandma (Grandma V) on his dad's side, she was around 95yrs old and basically died of natural causes (old age).  She died on Friday and Gmama died on Monday of last week!  Both families band me from knowing anything or being a part of anything.  I only found out yesterday b/c Matt texted me while he was in Ohio for Grandma V. To always remember them and my way to say goodbye and I love you one more time, I am making a necklace with a pendant that represents the absence of goodbyes and they are in a better place now, Heaven.  I will never forget them b/c they met so much to me despite the "short" amount of time I knew them....especially Grandma V...I connected with her like my own grandmother.  Thankfully I have several pictures of her.  I don't have any of Gmama.

Well, as always, I have vented enough.  I appreciate all of the continued support and I think I finally have an ending to my story despite my continued health problems.  The RSD would be the only major thing to continue to blog about.  My Fulkerson's have been deemed successful!!!

Don't worry, I am not leaving here :) I still have recovering to do on my left knee and still have RSD to treat.  Hope everyone else is doing well.  I am always sorry I don't follow other blogs.  I always get on here right before bed or when I have just a few minutes.

Wow, Farrah! I'm a newcomer to your diary; I noticed it when my own diary was moved into the 300+ post board, and at first thought I must have misread the page count - 225 pages of knee problems is a huge, huge amount! I started reading a couple of days ago and finally came to the end of your story this morning.

First of all, I just want to express my incredible admiration for you and the journey you've been through. I can't believe the spirit and determination that you've shown in the face of unbelievable, horrible odds. If there was ever a definition of grace under fire, you would be it. Reading your diary from beginning to end was an incredible rollercoaster of a ride; I found myself cheering for every little win and hurting on your behalf for the bad moments and the setbacks. I'm so sorry the final toll on your work life and marriage was so severe, but so happy to read that your second Fulkerson's was a success and you're well on the way to a more normal life. Do you know yet what realistic long-term goals are, or is it too hard to say with the RSD?

I also want to thank you for sharing this story with the world. It's painful and heartbreaking just to read it, so I cannot imagine what it must have been like to live through it one day after another after another. But the sad fact is that this does happen to people and when it does, hopefully your diary will help them understand that they're not on their own.

Wishing you all the best and very much hoping that the successful op is the start of a much brighter period in your life.

Hi Farrah,

Kay is right and been through hell and back with all your health problems and hope 2011 will be a better year for you. Like me you kept a diary online which will help others in a similar situtation and be great if we can both have a successful outcome with our knee problems and no longer have to post on our threads. I think I will reach 1000 posts before my right knee gets soted out.

For anyone that has ever kept up with my diary, here is an update.

So I had my left Fulkerson back in November and all went smoothly.  Since then, after much denial, I have finally admitted that I now have RSD in that leg as well :(  Today I got my spinal cord stimulator adjusted to hit that leg as well.  So with all the meds that I am on and with my SCS, I am fine.  My back is still causing tons of issues and about to start a new round of PT including dry needling (a form of acupuncture).  The needling has been a long time coming b/c of my SCS.  None of my PTs were brave enough to go around it.  I now have my pain doc's approval.  This is one of the last treatments before getting a pain pump implant put in.  A pain pump would help my back as well as help me reduce my meds for my RSD in both legs!  So it's a good idea all around, but a 9th surgery isn't ideal!

As for the outcome of my FUlkersons, I still have a lot of knee pain.  I think I have tendinitis in both knees, but who knows anymore.  I still communicate with my OS, but basically it's a matter of doing PT for my knees, but with my back pain, I am limited.  So my muscles are still weak.  I just started playing tennis again despite the pain in my legs and back, but am just standing there and not running around the court like I used to.

My life is still in turmoile.  I lost my house and was evicted in July and now live with my parents again.  They are not allowing my dogs inside the house...only in the garage (with fans of course).  My parakeets (which I got when Matt left me) are living with a friend since I am not allowed to have them here at all.  And my poor kitty, Jazzy, is living with my sister in a bathroom :(   I have searched and searched for a better temporary home, but no luck at all.  Living with my parents sucks b/c my dad is very very verbally abusive and I am constantly getting yelled at.  I never know if he will lose control enough to hit me....he comes close.  It's scary and sucks while at the same time he can be the sweetest person.  My dad had been working and living in Boston a lot and hasn't been around...so it has been easier.  My mom also visited a lot, so I have let my dogs sleep with me at night.  Well thanks to my unlucky life, my dad's company is closing and they are moving back here this weekend!  So now I have nothing to look forward to anymore!  MY LIFE SUCKS!

Since my last post, I found a job being on my feet for 12hrs a day outside.  In May I accepted the job with plans on making enough to continue to live in my house on my own or find an apartment after losing the house.  Well obviously that plan didn't work, but I stuck with the job until July 8th!!!!  Some of you know how hard it is for me to drive and stay awake.  Well I was invited to a HUGE business meeting in Texas on July 9th and was on my way home from work on July 8th when I wrecked my car.  I didn't remember driving about 6-7 miles and woke up when I hit the divider between the 6 lane each way interestate.  I was taking up the far left lane where cars had to slow down and drive around me!  Well since I was living with my parents at that time, I was stuck without a car and had to quit my job.  So, again, I am unemployed!  As for my fatigue when I drive, it turns out that I have sleep apnea and stop breathing up to 30 times in an hour while "sleeping".  So now I have a CPAP machine to keep me breathing, but I am struggling very very badly using it.  I find myself ripping it off and don't realize it until the next morning.  I have seen the specialist about my lack of adjusting, but she didn't help me much after I left there so motivated to try again.  At least I know what is making me so tired during the day!

Well that is my update!  OH, and I have a car again....a 1999 Cadillac Deville....my parents bought it for me for $3,000.

I hope anyone who reads this is doing well!

Hi Farrah,

Only last week I looked at your profile and saw you had not logged on KG since December 2010 and I know you contribute a lot to KG so was wondering when you would logged back on again. Sorry you are still having ongoing knee problems and may just have to accept that your knees will never be right again. Sorry you lost your house and have to live back with your parents again, it is ashame they are not dog friendly.

Hope you find a job soon and can move out of your parents house that does not sound like a nice place to be living in.

Hello everyone!!!  It has now been about 4.5 years since my right knee fulkerson and 2.5 years since my left fulkerson!  My life has been crazy since my last posts back in September 2011!!  I have now been divorced for 1.5years!  It's crazy that I started my blog when I was "happily" married and ended it divorced!

Knee and Back stuff:
As you guys know, I have had knee and back problems since my knee surgery...well my back was since 1998.  For my back update, I have been doing physical therapy for 1.5yrs now weekly.  She using dry needling and manual therapy along with lots of exercises.  This has helped a lot, but of course not 100%.  Some of the exercises that I do are also for my knees.  So with the meds I am on and the exercises, I am now playing tennis again!!!!!!  My RSD is under control with the SCS implant and I am feeling great...most of the time!  I have good days and then very very bad days!  I am having difficulty finding Opana ER anywhere where I live and don't know what to do!!!!  It's helps my pain so much and keeps me going.  I ran out and haven't played tennis since b/c I can't.

My knees are doing well from the Fulkerson, but I have new problems.  My right knee isn't tracking correctly when I go down stairs.  I have to straight my leg, relax the muscles, and then take the step.  I don't know what's going on.  For the last several months, my knees where the screws are have been burning when I use my leg muscles.  I thought it was my RSD, but since it's on both sides, I realized it's not.  I e-mailed my OS this evening and got a quick response.  He does think the screws are causing some problems and wants to see me immediately when he returns from out of town...May 4th at 9:30am.

Has anyone else had these problems with screws?

Personal Life Crap:
In October of 2011, I was living with my parents.  My dad and I have never gotten along!  Well with his crazy temper and verbal and sometimes physical abuse, he pushed me around, knocked me against a wall, pin me between a wall and a door while the door was opening, and chased me around with a bat.  I had to call the police and had to leave.  I packed up my car with my babies (dogs) and left.  I had nowhere to go, no money, no job, nothing!  I went to the dog park to borrow a cell phone to call some friend since immediately, my dad turned my phone service off.  I ended up staying with a friend for 3wks. Then I moved into a women's abuse shelter while my dogs stayed with with my friend that I lived with for 3wks.  I lived there until about February when I met a family that needed "a wife" since the husband has cancer.  They needed someone to help them out since the husband was basically disabled.  So I moved in with this wonderful family.  I now live in their basement indefinitely...with my dogs.  My sweet cat lives with a friend that I met at church.

Religious stuff:
I grew up as a Muslim, but after all the crap I went through, my friend led me to study Christianity (my choice).  So now I am a lot closer to God and believe in prayers!  This has helped me so much!

I hope to reconnect with some of you that have been following my blog for so long!!!!

Farrah

Here are 2 separate posts that I posted on Facebook yesterday:

I had physical therapy today which went okay...dizziness/light headedness again! Most importantly, my RSD was horribly bad today! I could hardly walk on it once I got home. So I had 2hrs before I had to be "on the clock" this evening, so I took a nap with heat on my leg the whole time...and took all 4 of the meds that help me with pain! I woke up back the normal amount of pain! :) I see my Ortho Surgeon on Friday for my screw issue. I am 90% sure that the screw pain is causing my RSD to flair up like it has been over the last few weeks!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, so I am freaking out!! I can't find one of my pain medications at any pharmacy anywhere!!!!!!!!! Nobody can order it and my pain SUCKS without it! Without it, I still have medications for my pain: neurontin, cymbalta, indocin, roxicodone, and soma...but they only work with the one I need: Opana ER! How do I find a medication that nobody can get???????????? I have been on it for years!

The other thing is that yesterday I felt a horrible burning sensation going from where my spinal cord stimulator is and across my back. It hurt so badly to move. My mind is going crazy in thinking that is it a new problem with my SCS? Or is it a new back pain symptom? I pray that it is nothing, but my PT was concerned about it when I told her. I need to exercise more, but it's so hard when I have these pains.

Also, my RSD pain came back tonight full force and sucks! All I go back to is thinking about all of the bad things that happened a few years ago back when it was so bad all of the time! I just keep thinking about walking with my stupid cane, walker, crutches, etc! I keep thinking about all of the struggles mentally and physically!

I am so afraid that my screws are some of my pain problems in my knees and RSD! If so, and they have to be removed, that could cause a lot of problems and pain with my RSD!

My mind is wandering b/c of the pain I have in my back, knees, and legs!!!!

I want to write a book!!!!!!!!! For my KG friends, would people read it?

Hi Farrah,

I wish you the best of luck in writing your book for KG and for others Worldwide that have knee problems as I am also thinking about writing and publishing my own book about the highs & lows of living on the Autistic spectrum and how I manage my Asperser syndrome and the main part in my book is about my breakdown I had in 2004/05 and going to put some of my chapters on an online Blog.

You should also set up your own Blog if you have not done so already as I am sure many people would be interested in reading what you been through.

Thanks for the book support, Nick!  As for blogging, I don't have enough going on anymore to continue a blog.  I just add to this one now and again.  Right now, the screws, chondromalacia, and continued patella subluxation are my issues.  I have a shallow trochlear groove on my right knee and keep forgetting to ask my OS if that's why I have continued to have the subluxations in that knee.  He continues to think that it's just weak muscles, but we'll see.  My quads are solid!  You can't even poke a finger into them...it's like a piece of wood for a quad!  My VMO could still get stronger though.

Gotta go!

A lot has happened since my last post.  My spinal cord stimulator that helps with my RSD pain in my legs stopped working properly!  So after starting a full time job, my RSD flared up badly and I went from a cane to crutches and almost to a wheel chair.  It took a few weeks to get surgery scheduled for a replacement SCS!  I got it done 5 weeks ago and doing much better in that area.  Unfortunately, what I think is screw pain, has continued.  Thursday of last week I fell over a 50lb dog and worsened my already painful surgery.  I also landed hard on both of the fronts of my knees!!  OH THE PAIN!!  Anyway, I am now in a sling for 2 weeks or as long as the pain is bad enough to not feel like using it.  I can't get an MRI to see if it's a torn rotator cuff, but it's definitely rotator cuff pain thanks to soft tissue tenderness and pain.  I started a medrol dose pack today and hopefully in a few weeks can get some inflammation pain relief and let my shoulder calm down.  In the mean time, continued PT for my shoulder, knees, and back!  UGH!  I get good relief in my back at PT, but not so much everywhere else.  What amazes me is that it's all on my right side!

I hope everyone else that used to follow my blog is doing much better!
