Hey Diane!  Jasmine (my kitten) is doing much better!  Finally something going our way!  We thought he'd need to go to the vet and cost a fortune!  He's the sweetest little kitty.  He tends to like Matt more than me...probably b/c I care for his sore on his back and look like the bad guy.  He also comes when we call him...most of the time.  If he can't come, he cries until we find him....we have an alley between our house and the neighbor's where he sometimes gets stuck until he finds his way back (the way that he left in the first place).  We can't figure out where he escapes from our fenced yard...my husband thinks it could be some of the trees that are rooted in our yard and have grown over the fence to a height easy for him to jump up or climb.  So we think those trees are how he leaves.  Our yard is plenty big enough for him to stay and still seem like he's exploring!

So my mom got in touch with the lawyer and they have agreed that I should pursue the case!  It could cost up to $20,000 just to pursue it!  They hire a medical record expert who requests my records from all of the necessary doctors which is where it starts costing money!  My parents are willing to pay for the case for us and we just pay them back if we win anything!  It's a scary idea for me to have to pursue certain doctors who I like and trust!  I am so worried that I will no longer be able to see some of the doctors that are great and good at what they do!  So I still have mixed feelings, but I promised my mom that I would meet with the lawyer and decide from there.  I still need to call and get an appt.

I have another EKG tomorrow...2nd one this week to check on how the new heart med is doing in my system since starting it on Saturday.  I hope it's an improvement from the one on Monday.....that one still showed my resting heart rate at 94bpm which is still too high.

I do still volunteer with the dog shelters!  I have narrowed it down to my favorite one which allows "sick" days with all of my medical problems.  I go every Thursday night at 8:45pm to let them all out for their last potty break of the night.  It only takes about an hour....and it's fun to pet them and play with some of them.  I wish I could take them all home! Sometimes you just feel sorry for what they went through before they got there.  Some have scars to show it.  It makes me feel good, though, to know that I am making them feel better and find a forever home!

"Marriage maintenance" is very important!  I try to give us as many opportunities was possible to have alone time or time where we can just talk.  I don't want to ever be one of those couples that goes our to eat and just stares at each other or looks around and doesn't talk.

I am visiting Pittsburgh, PA at the end of June for my cousin's wedding and to finally meet another cousin's new baby! I guess I Need to go and buy my airlline tix!!!

Glad to hear from you!

Hey Guys (or anyone that reads this anymore) :P,

Since my last post a few new things have come up or been treated.  For now, my heart medication regimen is doing well.  I still have episodes with very light activity, but I feel like we are making some progress.  I see the EP Cardiologist again in 1.5wks for a follow up to see if maybe we can try the heart procedure again or if we should continue meds for another 1-2 months.

My shoulder is doing much better...haven't had a muscle twinge in a few weeks now.  So shoulder PT is done and knee PT is back ON!  Yikes! I was so afraid that starting back again would cause my RSD to flare up as soon as we started.  I was wrong!  Casey did a great job working with me on getting back into a few exercises involving balance mainly.  The problem with balancing exercises is that's when my RSD hurts the worst.  So we have agreed to maybe balance for 30 seconds at a time rather than 1 minute.  By the end of 1 minute, my RSD kills!  So I think we are on the right track in slowly getting back into fixing my patellar tendinosis and possibly my RSD pain.  He started dry needling my quad which is meant for anterior knee pain, but he hopes it could help the RSD pain as well.  We'll see.  As long as my RSD doesn't flare up, I am going with trying anything that could help!

I had bilateral SI Joint injections last week for my low back pain.  It's been just over a week now and they still haven't kicked in (if they are going to).  My pain is so bad that it wakes me up at night or just very very sore and stiff when I first get out of bed.  I sleep on my side with a large pillow between my legs, but it persists despite my measures.  I wish I knew the future of my back problems!  Don't we all!

I had a job interview last week for a position in my sister's marketing research company.  I had a second interview today and hope it works out!  I have no idea how many I am up against, but I do know they are all fresh out of college compared to me.  I hope that doesn't matter and I hope that despite not having the Microsoft Office 2007 on my personal computers, that I have done well on the two "tests" that they gave us.  I have not been able to practice anything at home before these interviews, but I don't know if this will matter.  I will keep you all posted.

I am working on my malpractice case, but it will take another 2 weeks or so for me to get all the needed information compiled into one notebook.  I am working on it.  I am also 2 weeks away from a deadline of turning in the rest of my architecture IDP credits to begin testing and getting licensed!  The are implementing a new rule that is causing me to have to figure out the rest of the hours that I worked in architecture, get my architect to sign them, and then submit them all before July 1st!!!!  I will work on it tomorrow.  Since I began the IDP credits, the company that keeps our records has changed a lot and also changed how you submit them.  So I will have to call them tomorrow and figure it all out.  I don't want to lose all of the hours I worked up to my credits to complete the Intern program!!!!

My cat is doing great! His sore on his back and his bad cold were worsening quickly, so I finally took him to the vet last week.  They put him on 2 antibiotics and glucosamine/chondroitin vitamins (for pain/Nsaid).  He's doing so much better a week and a few days later.  He cries a lot in the guest room (where he is kept while recovering for 2 weeks total b/c of matt's allergies) just to get some attention or let us know he's not happy with something.  He will cry and cry until I clean his litter box (which I already do daily), cry because he's hungry, cry for some loving, and other things.  He's a cat that knows what he wants!

Well that's my full plate for now!  I am so busy that I get overwhelmed at times and just nap!  Tomorrow I need to finish figuring out how to submit my last IDP credits to be an architect, call insurance company to get some paper work to help with my law suit, schedule a follow up appt for Jazzy (my cat), and many other things!

I leave for PA on Thursday of next week, but my husband will be home to take care of our mini in-house zoo :)  I love it!  I'd get more animals if we could afford it!

Since it's 2:30am here, I am going to try to get back to sleep again.

Hello anyone,

I saw my pain MD today and we discussed a lot! I asked for some new treatments for my RSD besides meds and my SCS. My RSD is causing my tendinitis in my knees to persist.  Since I can only tolerate so much at PT, I could be doing it forever!  The problem is that the more knee PT I do, the more my RSD flares up and makes PT unbearable.  So we wait a few weeks for it to improve again and then try again.  This has been the pattern for too long and is time to figure out another way around the RSD pain so I can still do knee PT.  So he is sending me for Biofeedback which is where you learn relaxing techniques to help get through the pain.  I also requested to get off my NSAID so that I can better determine if physical therapy is helping.  With the nSAID, it helped the pain enough to be able to tolerate more activities than I should be doing.  My PT and I agreed this is the best option while doing PT.  At PT, he is doing a form of acupuncture called dry needling.  He basically sticks one needle in my quad at a time and moves it around to relax the muscle.  He usually does 3-4 needles and then applies heat immediately after to prevent soreness.  We have done it twice now and I am hoping that it's helping, but b/c of the NSAID, it's hard to tell.

Some of you may see my FB status updates now and again about some arguments with my husband or family about taking morphine and so many other meds.  My husband thinks the morphine changes my personality and makes me "evil".  So to stop all of the nagging, I worked up the courage and spoke to my pain doctor about it at my last appt 4wks ago.  He suggested looking into two other meds that could take the place.  So at today's appt, he chose Opana ER to take the place of my MS Contin (morphine).  After a long scavenger hunt, I had to drive 30mins to find a pharmacy that carried Opana products and the particular dosage my doctor prescribed (30mg).  2pharmacists said they don't carry Opana meds at all and another pharmacy said they have never heard of that dosage he prescribed.  So on my own, I went to the 3rd chain pharmacy store and not only did they carry it, but they had it in stock!!!  So I think they will be my monthly pharmacy when refills are needed.

Changing from MS Contin straight to another med scares the crap out of me.  Back in December 2009, my PS (pain specialist) reduced my MS Contin from 3 pills a day to 2 pills a day...I was sick for 2wks with withdrawals.  Thinking nothing could be done about it, I suffered until my body finally got used to it.  After speaking with my pharmacist cousin, her only concern with the new med is that I will be in more pain until the right dosage is found.  So this can actually take a few months of adjusting my dose before my pain is under control.  My cousin doesn't think that I will have withdrawals from stopping the morphine and starting the Opana in it's place in the same day.  So I trust her.  Since I am going out of town tomorrow-Sunday for my cousin's wedding, I will start the new med on Monday.  Cross your fingers that it will help!!!  Having RSD sucks!!!

Anyway, it's approaching 2:30am here and I should try to get some sleep now.  I hope I still have some supporters here :)

Hi Guys,

So knee PT is going okay so far.  Yesterday was pretty cool b/c my old PT was sitting near where Casey and I were exercising and she said, "wow, Farrah, you are doing a lot!"  I smiled and agreed, but then reminded her that I have the spinal cord stimulator which is the only way I am weight bearing at all!  My PT did add some new exercises yesterday and stepped up some of my current ones.  It's a nice workout now, but unfortunately, my heart started racing during some of them and had to rest.

I start Biofeedback therapy next week to help me get through my RSD pain during my knee PT for tendinitis.  The therapy is to teach me to relax through pain without meds.  Hopefully this will help get through physical therapy.  What always happens is after about 1-1.5mos of PT, my RSD flares up to a point that I can't tolerate PT anymore.  So the only way for me to feel better is to completely stop PT.  Then after 1-2mos we try again and the same thing happens.  I am tired of starting over all the time and also tired of having the tendinitis pain.  So that's why I finally asked my pain doctor what else I can do for my RSD pain besides medication and my SCS.  So he suggested the biofeedback.  What I liked was that the day after my PS appt, the new therapy place called to schedule my appt!  Normally you have to wait forever for them to call you b/c they have to review your records or whatever.  Anyway, July 6th is my first appt with the therapist.  I am anxious to see how it works out and if it helps enough to get through PT or any flare up.

I still don't have a job...so I spend a lot of time at home.  I saw my psychiatrist today who suggested that I force myself to go out socially at least once a week.  I have isolated myself for so long now and don't go anywhere unnecessary.  I cancel dates with my husband, I have missed baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, and other events b/c I just don't feel well or don't want to go out.  I am also very self conscious about my weight and my eczema.  So my isolation could be for many reasons.  I did find out today that one of my depression meds causes weight gain...so that explains some of my recent weight gain!  I was happy to know that it wasn't my diet...well not all of it anyway.

I went to Pennsylvania for the weekend for my cousin's wedding.  It was a nice family reunion.  Matt was the only one missing out of cousins and spouses since he had to work.  He was definitely missed, but it was still so much fun seeing everyone.  My family is so much fun together and we hung out a lot.  I did end the wedding night early b/c of pain and was just miserable in the heat.  It wasn't too much later than that when the rest of the family arrived and we hung out in the hotel lobby and ordered pizza!  It was considered the "after party" :)  I flew home on Sunday b/c of my PT and MD appts yesterday and today.  My grandfather is having hip replacement surgery in August, so he started walking with a cane.  Besides me, nobody else in my family has ever needed a cane or any assistance with walking.  His doctor assures him that he will recover from the surgery quickly. I disagree, but supposedly knee replacements are worse than hip replacements.  I guess I will find out once he's got his new hip.

Well that's it for now....will update next time anything new comes up.

Nothing real special to report here. † Just continuing physical therapy and showing some slight improvement thanks to the acupuncture! They upgraded some exercises about 2 weeks ago that weren't fun, but I got through them. †

My OS is ready for me to have my "good" knee fixed with a Fulkerson procedure. †My husband is afraid that I will go through 2.5yrs of pain and frustrations like last time. †So even the appt to look at my "good" knee is on hold. †

My back pain is killing me again. †My third injection wore off about 1.5wks ago. †I have sharp and achy pain while laying in bed and walking or standing for 5-10mins. †I am using my TENS unit on it for now, but I have called my pain doctor to see what can be done on a more permanent basis. †We'll see. †The next step will probably be a radiofrequency of the SI joint. †Basically it damages a portion of the nerve to help pain relief. †The pain eventually comes back once the nerve regenerates. †So it's considered a semi-permanent solution. †It's better than getting injections every 1-3mos. †

My cat is doing great! †He just got neutered 2 weeks ago. †We are beginning to allow him outside again, but with the current heat wave, we can't leave him out all day yet. †So until the heat wave is over, he will still live in our guest room part time. †i hope it's over soon! †

That's all for now. †I appreciate everyone's continued interest in my story! †(I have been getting a few e-mails from supporters and it keeps me going!)

Hi Farrah,

I still read your posts and I am sure others do as well but most do not reply back and nice to get one reply back rather then none at all. Hope the Fulkerson procedure goes well when it finally happens and benefits your knee.

Sorry your back is not getting any better and had 2 injections in my right knee and its not really got rid of the knee pain and may need a 2nd scope on my right knee if friction massage does not work out for me.

Glad you are enjoy having your cat, I am lucky to have a nice friendly house cat called Ellie, who very†affectionate and likes alot of fuss and attention and loves to lie on my lap when I watching TV.

Wow, thanks for your post!  I like to share my story so others know what can come of the type of surgery I had.  The condition is no fun at all and I am so sorry that your 17yr old daughter has it in so many areas!  Has she talked to her doctor about getting a spinal cord stimulator?  That has changed my life!  I went from walking with crutches/cane to walking almost normally!  I highly recommend it despite some of the problems I had with that as well.  It turned our perfectly after going through hell :)

As for an update, a TON has happened recently!  First, my husband left me!  Most of you guys know we have struggled through my medical problems.  Well since losing my last job, we are now losing our house and just filed bankruptcy.  So he finally gave up :(  I was devastated at first, but now I know I need to move on with my life.  We will not get a formal divorce until I find another job.  That way he will still help me with my health insurance and some other minor things that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise.  Yes, it sucks, but I am getting through this.  My parents are sooooooo angry with him and will not even let me say his name.  They will make it difficult for me to get through this in a civilized way.  I don't want to argue with Matt while going through this.  It's hard enough without arguing.  I will be moving to my parent's lakehouse about 1.5hrs outside of town while continuing to job search.  I will drive into town when I have doctors appts or job interviews.  It will be nice and relaxing living there.  I will also be allowed to have my dogs and cat there.  If I moved into their regular house, they'd want my pets caged too much.  I will NOT live without my pets...even for a day!  They have gotten me through all of the last 2.5yrs.

As for my health stuff, I have had several medical appts since my last update.  I finally saw a new dermatologist about my eczema.  She has me on 3 topical meds and 1 oral.  It has made a huge difference over the last week.  Most of the bad stuff has already starting scaring.  I'd rather have scars than sores!  I saw my OS about my "good" knee.  He has me wearing a knee brace and going through PT for 6wks.  When I see him again, we will decide about surgery or not.  He's very nervous about doing surgery on my "good" leg since I have RSD in my other leg from surgery.  He's going to contact my pain doctor about precautions for another surgery.  He wants to make sure he does everything possible to prevent the spread of my RSD.  I am not worried about it since I have had 7 surgeries in my back with no problems with RSD.  I feel like nothing can get worse....how much worse can it get :)  I also saw my pain doctor on Wednesday and they sent me for a CT scan of my low back.  I had my 3rd SI joint injection already and can't get another one.  The last one worse off a few weeks ago and has left me suffering through back pain.  I go back in 1.5wks to go over the CT results.  I am trying to get in earlier, but they are very strict about moving up appts without my doctor's approval.  They are like that b/c of pain meds.  Generally they see patients every 4wks and no earlier, but they have exceptions when you have had tests done.  So we'll see when I can get in.  I have the CT scan report, but don't know what to make of it.  It looks like a few very minor things, but I kind of hope one of them is the reason for my pain.  It's always easier to have a clear cut problem rather than just having pain meds and such to get through it.

As for my bad knee, it's doing really well!  The acupuncture has really helped and I hope to continue that while getting my "good" knee treated at PT.  I strongly suggest getting that treatment!!!

Well that's my life for now  :-\

Farrah, Iím so sorry to read of your marital separation and continued pain
issues. From the tone of your post, you sound ďupbeatĒ and trying to
make lemonade out of lemons. Glad you have your animals to comfort
you.

I have neck, back, knee, and ankle pain. Knee was replaced in April 09,
and just recently had radiation, arthroscopic debridement and manipulation.
Got some improvement in ROM but still have pain.† I also have RA and
Fibro. so Iím always dealing with pain somewhere in my body. Each day,
itís a matter of degree† - today the neck, yesterday the lower back, and tomorrow
will probably be the knee because I have PT. Six weeks ago I had an epidural, which
provided some relief but now thatís all worn off and the weekly Enbrel injection for RA
is losing effect; always seems to be chasing some kind of pain.

Anyway, your posts are compelling and heartfelt. Stay strong.

Carolyn

Carolyn, thanks so much for your post.  So sorry to hear of all of your pain problems!  RA and Fibro are tough on top of your other problems!  I can't imagine having pain anywhere at any given time.

As for my marriage issues I am upbeat one minute and falling apart the next.  This afternoon was a rough one for me.  I couldn't stop thinking about what I have lost and how I want it back  :'( :'( :'(  I am okay right now, but it sucks getting so upset about something that I can no longer control.  This Wednesday I start my new psychologist and hopefully will get some relief there.  I am also "restarting" biofeedback with the new place.  My original therapist was falling asleep and not really paying attention to what I was saying during my appt.  I also start my "good" knee PT on Wednesday.  I am not looking forward to that....I am really getting sick of PT!!!  I have been doing it off and on for my knees and my back since 1998! This time I have been doing it since around February once a week on my bad knee.

The only good thing going on in my life right now is that I am trying to get some of my medical problems resolved while I have good health insurance.  Once I get divorced it will disappear and I will hopefully have a job with good benefits.  It sucks going through house foreclosure, filing bankruptcy, trying to find a job, my husband leaving me, losing my health insurance within a few months, and going through all of my medical problems!  Wow, that's a lot of stuff when it's listed out!  As my pain doctor said last week, you have got to feel suicidal now and again with all that you are going through....well, I wouldn't ever do anything stupid like that.  I don't think it solves anything.

Thanks again for all of your support here!  It's so nice to hear from new KG people :)

Farrah so sorry you have the seperation to deal with on top of everthing else, you must be going through hell just now so I am sending my sympathies and a big ((((hug))))) not that it will make things any better for you but just to show you there are people who care that things have been so hard for you.
Good luck with the job hunt and all your different P.T and Doctor appointments, if anyone deserves a break it's you.
Take care Tez

Hi Guys, You guys have no idea how much your continued support means to me! I am sorry that I am not so good at responding to any threads that you have going!

Tomorrow is the day that I start PT on my "good" knee (left).  I ordered a new knee brace for that one that's the same as the one I had for my right knee.  The one that my OS gave me irritates my skin b/c of the rubber.  My new one has a blue gel-like insert that doesn't bother me or collect sweat.  It's the BEST brace for people with subluxation problems!  It's called the Shield Brace by Hely and Weber.  I do not get the ones with the hinges...it's purely a neoprene brace with a gel insert to put over your knee cap.  There are two sets of straps....one to put the brace on and the other set is to pull your knee cap over with the insert over the area you want to pull.  It's great!  I can even wear it on my RSD leg despite the brace being wrapped around the painful area.  Those with RSD know how hard it is to allow anything to even touch it.

I see my new psychologist for counselling and biofeedback tomorrow afternoon.  Hopefully the biofeedback can get me on a good start to days without as much pain meds.  For anyone who doesn't know, this biofeedback is a type of therapy where they teach you how to relax through pain.  It will take a few months to get used to it enough to make a difference, but I will be trying to make it work.

Friday I get my CT scan results of my low back.  I have tried to interpret the results of my report myself, but it's always easier for the doctor to tell you what the findings are.  Your mind can go nuts otherwise!  I don't want to assume the worst, but it does look like I have some bone spurs that could be the reason for the main part of my pain.  There is also very minor stenosis (hard for me to describe).  We'll see if any of that can be treated to the point of less or no pain.

Busy week still ahead of me!

Hey Farrah,

I have not been on this site for a  while now but regularly follow your posts. I had a TTT/LR/MPFL 20months ago and then had revision surgery and screw removal 6 months ago. I could not have done it without this site.

We mailed a few times on our posts and i just wanted to say that i am so sorry for what you are going through at the moment. You sound like an amazing lady and someone who is so tough and deserves the best.

I hope that everything works out for you and sounds like it will take some time but with the resiliance you have i know you will get there.

Take care,  :)

Hi Farrah

I found your thread while searching "cymbalta" on the KG website. I came across your posts. I've been on KG since 2003. While reading thru your horrific experiences , I unfortunately found someone who has gone thru almost the same experiences as me. It was really eerie reading thru. It would take too much of your thread to go thru it all. I too am the 1% of all complications and problems....nothing going right !!! I've been thru a medical malpractice lawsuit, severe nerve problems in my knee/leg , 7 meds treating it thru pain management, monthly nerve blocks of 12 injections, met with SCS rep...not doing it quite yet. Heart( atrial fibrillation) heart ablation for SVT, gastritis, developed high BP, weight gain of 40lbs and developed metabolic syndrome from pain meds, currently trying to withdrawl from cymbalta because of 9 side affects ( prescribed for neuropathic pain and on it for 2 yrs), getting ready for surgery #18. I post over in the Arthrofibrosis section on the Open Debridement thread and missmyknee's blog in the Hub. My malpractice case took 4 yrs. My deposition was 6 hrs long and done 3 yrs after filing..

Anyway, I just wanted to say, I COMPLETELY understand what you are going thru. The only thing I have not had is a MRSA infection ( knock on wood)

I found this link to be of particular help to myself, my family and friends, to understand Intractable Pain

Stay positive and hopeful.
