Crunching noise 15 months after keyhole surgery
« on: January 09, 2008, 08:28:35 PM »
I'm a keen sportsman and have been very active since an early age (now nearly 37) - In August 2006 I had key hole surgery on my right knee to wash out some loose bone. After less than 2 months I was back playing rugby and felt 100% until the end of the season (April 07). During the summer I started getting an ache in my other knee - This progressively became worse and I ended up having an MRI which showed a torn meniscus and a cist on my cartilage for which I am due to have surgery at the end of this month.
In the last couple of weeks though I have noticed a horrible crunching noise in my right knee while going up stairs or squating etc. (It sounds like someone walking over rice crispies). There is no pain though!
I don't know if this is related to my original operation or due to over compensation because of my left knee problem or a bit of both.
I have two questions really -
1) does anyone know what this crunching noise might be and if it is serious.
2) Should I go to the doctor or wait a couple of weeks until I see the specialist about my other knee and ask him about it (Note that it is the same consultant that performed the original op).

Many Thanks :-)

Hey Reesy,

The rice crispy noise has a really great name called crepitus (not sure I spelled it right).  I had that for years, and as long as there is no pain is should not be a concern.  It is likely from all the sports and possibly the last op.  It usually is the cartilage on the back of the keecap wearing out.  It certainly does not hurt to ask about any new noises you hear, ask the doc when you see him.  I wouldn't make a special appointment, but if you are really concerned make another appointment.  It really is a terrible noise though isn't it?

Ive had that noise since my knee surgery 20 years ago. I think it sounds like wet snow crunching. Its not a nice sound!!!
Its never bothered me in terms of pain though.

Mine is so loud standing up from a chair or going upstairs that people around me can hear it.  It isn't painful though.

Hey Helen - Read through your other post.  Yikes!  It may be that now your kneecap is not tracking properly after the fall.  I actually hit mine on a cinderblock sledding as a kid.  The darn thing hasn't really been right since.  The crunching could be the cartilage on the back of the kneecap.  That doesn't usually show on x-rays or MRIs.  I knew mine was really torn up, but once I saw the pics of the scope.  I wondered why it hadn't caused more pain before.  Definately get another opinion.  Not many docs like to say they don't know.   Good luck.

Thanks everyone!!!
Itís very reassuring to hear that the crunching noise is common and not likely to be serious. Because itís such a loud and horrible noise as some of you have already said, I assumed the worse and thought more operations and even more time off sport Ė This time next week Iíll be recovering from the operation on my left knee Ė Iím looking forward to getting it all over and done with. Due to NHS waiting times etc. and one knee packing in after the other, this has been going on for years† :(
