don't know what to do next...
« on: December 30, 2007, 12:16:04 AM »
First of all, thanks for looking at my post.

This is my situation. I'm 31 and have some knee issues that I'm not sure where to go with next. Luckily I found this website and am excited to hear what people can recommend to me! When I  was 5 I fell off a bike and tore my ACL. Nothing was ever done for it because nobody knew. It wasn't a big problem though and I was very active running, snowboarding, hiking AK, mtn biking, and doing whatever else I wanted. Sometimes my knee would give out but usually it would pop back into place fine. One day when my knee buckled I tore my meniscus and when the surgeon went in to repair it, he realized I didn't have an ACL and hadn't had one for years. I was then 24. That was my first ACL repair, which failed. Though a couple OS told me my knee was fine, I went to a physical therapist who acknowledged my hunch that something was not right. So I then had my second ACL surgery. My knee felt better than the first time so I was excited. But a couple months ago I knew thath something wasn't right again. I want to another OS who informed me that my 2nd ACL had also failed. He took xrays and an MRI and told me there was nothing he personally would do for me and that I am too young right now for a knee replacement. He said my osteoarthritis is pretty bad but I still may have a little time where some other surgeon might be able to do something for me. He said I should get something done within the year before the osteoarthritis gets any worse. (I've stopped my daily running and walking. Luckily I can still bike and kayak) He also said my knee, the bone and such, is pretty hashed and soft looking inside and he's not sure anyone could even do another ACLR on it.He recommended I go to the MAYO clinic here in Jacksonville,FL and see about meniscal replacement and another ACLR. (After looking into it, I'm not so sure the docs at the JAX MAYO are super specialists like I'm looking for).My knee has constant pain, is very unstable and often feels like it is hyperextending a bit as I walk. I often limp as I walk now. My knee situation is REALLY holding me back from some important things in my life like playing with my 3 boys who are 5,3 and 1. Not to mention all the active things I love to do. So that's where I'm at. And now here are my questions:

1. Has anyone heard of OrthoGlide(TM) Medial Knee Implant? What do you know? Good? Bad?
2. Could I even consider an osteotomy for my case?
3. How successful are ACL repairs the 3rd time around?
4. Who are the BEST of the BEST ACLR surgeons? (I really want it to work this time)

I know I need to get a few more consultations but my insurance is extremely minimal because I'm a stay at home mom and my husband is a full-time student (and the school doesn't offer student insurance at the post grad level) so I can't just go throwing our scanty out of pocket money around to these docs. I really want to narrow down my options before I start my visits. I've got an appointment with the MAYO clinic and they are charging $565 to be seen, and that's not including any more xrays and mris!

Thanks for your suggestions,
April

I'm from Indiana...

Dr. Shelbourne is one of (if not the) leading specialists in ACLR.  I know that you probably don't want to come to Indiana....but perhaps someone in your area consults with him.

By the way...with the weather here right now....freezing cold....I wish that I were in Florida right now!

But....my Hoosiers are winning!!

:) Hope that helps a bit

Thank you, and I would go anywhere to get this done right! Even to snow!
