Daily knee popping question
« on: December 23, 2007, 04:03:50 AM »
Hello,
I'm new to the board and have a question.  I've looked through the archives a bit, but haven't found anything resembling my question.

My knees pop on their own when I walk (or bike about 20 meters), but sometimes during the day  my kneecaps feel "unsettled."  I can either wait for them to pop on their own (which is a tad uncomfortable), or I can kneel on something with knees relaxed, pushing the kneecap up and inducing it to pop.  Can anyone explain what is going on?

Bad dislocations run in my family, but I have never had my knees looked at because they have never dislocated.  I'm 24 and my mother had to have hers surgically re-located three times by my age.  I'm not looking for a diagnosis, just an explanation or some terms I could look up.

Thanks!

It sounds as if your knee cap is subluxing.  In simple terms it means going out of the groove and then sliding back into it. It can be painful and should be looked at before it actually begins to truly dislocate itself out of the groove.
6/03/89 - First Knee Cap Disclocation
7/05/89 - Returned to work
6/17/06 - Tramatic Knee Cap Dislocation and Vertical Fractured Patella
6/28/06 - ORIF - Screws - no wires
8/24/06 - Ditched the brace - start PT
9/20/06 - First spinning
1/15/07 - screw removal, LR , VMO Advanc  & patella cleanupl

But what is the mechanism behind the popping?  Is it a nitrogen bubble?  It's not really painful, but the kneecap does move a few centimeters.

from personal experience, my knees pop (and dislocate) and the popping sound in my knees is the sound of the patella popping back into groove, so it's more of a bone against bone clicking than a popping. Does this sound similar?

I suggest that you do have it checked out by a specialist before you do start getting dislocations. If your knee is subluxing then you can have physio to prevent dislocations.

1995 - first trip to the doctor with 'growing pains'
1998 - xrays show left patella is out of place
1999 - first dislocation
1999-2006 - Physio therapy every week
Jan2007 - Traumatic dislocation
feb 2007 - OS suggests surgery
Jan 2008 - date for surgery 30th jan

Well, the popping is happening when the kneecap is furthest from its rest position, so i don't think it's bone on bone...
Anyway, if it is subluxion, is it better for it to pop on its own or for me to 'release' it in a controlled way?

Thanks for your advice, by the way.  I am finding many topics on thsi board to be interesting.
