cat's derotation diary
« on: October 05, 2007, 10:52:23 PM »
Dear Diary…
Isn’t that how you’re supposed to start these?  I am writing this because I am a crazy gal with no life and nothing to do and have made my knee situation an opportunity to get attention- NOT. (At least hopefully not).

Actually I thought it might be therapeutic to vent and whine online vs to my family and friends. And just maybe, this might be of interest to some other twisted sister or brother out there.

Some of you know me already- cat – twisted legged fun loving mother of many. Minor knee stuff until I took up ice skating and voila, the minor became more major. After a little over a year of therapy and 7 doctors, I let # 7 rearrange my parts. I am now 3 years post op TTT (Elmslie Trillat), medial reefing, VMO advancement and Z-release. I saw Dr F in CT, Dr F in Indy, and now am scheduled for- drum roll please-  an interchanteric osteotomy of my femur and an undoing of the previous realignment work by Dr T in MI. The date is Oct 18th. Make sure you have your earplugs ready cause I can be quite loud when I’m not happy. I hope this dude is not stingy with the drugs for everyone’s sake.

I’ve had some snafus with setting the spin the leg deal up. The first surgery date was cancelled AFTER I had purchased plane tickets. Then there were insurance problems, neither the hospital nor the doc are in network despite what I had originally been told. Then there was talk of doing the procedures separately because of reimbursement issues, meaning I would have to go through the hassle and expense of more out of town trips and co pays as well as a longer more drawn out recovery process. So setting this up has not been smooth sailing.

I’ve been to the Community Blood Ctr to donate blood for my surgery. I had to go twice one week apart as I don’t weigh enough to draw a full unit at one setting.  That wasn’t too bad but I wonder how many times you can stick the same vein? I have to do pre-op blood work this next week yet.

I’ve got my handicap placard- a must for the holiday shopping, and have done the pre-op phone interview with the hospital. I’m still waiting with fingers crossed to find out if the hospital will be approved as in network. I sure hope so otherwise there might not be much need for that close parking.  I’ll spend the weekend relocating the boys so that their room is available for my mom. I pick her up from the airport on Tues. I’m so glad she’s coming to help out.

Things are starting to get a bit too real here.

Hey Larry,
Thanx for the reply. I read some of your posts and I'm glad to hear you are a bit better. I've heard that ACL surgery can be quite painful.
Hang in there,

Cat,

Good luck with everything.  I'll have my earplugs ready for when you get out of surgery.

I'll definately be curious as to how everything turns out with your surgery.  At least we can both take comfort in the fact that we have a really nop notch surgeon working on our knees! :)

Cat:

I was in a room with mosty TKR's and they were either too doped up on morphine or in too much pain to care if I was singing along. The music helped to get away from it all...it was pretty crazy at times! ::) I was suppose to be moved to a semi-private room but it never happened! ::) No sure why..not enough beds I assume. ???

Thank You!  Thank You!  Thank You!
Had my scan done. Not sure if the tech got the correct placement of my feet so hope it turns out accurately. :-\ Tommorrow I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am but at least won't have to starve and worry all day. I plan to take a yoga class tonight. (I'm hoping it will help me catch some zzs.) And then it's off to enjoy the last supper.

Ta ta for now everyone,

It's 9:15 pm. I am a hurting puppy.I am stuck in bed with a CPM machine, foot pump machine, not enogh morphine, and a hospital computer that doesn't work right but taht i am having to pay for. But I should be grateful as I am not nauseous and lucid enough to write this. I have a wonderful spouse.

I had to be at the hospital @ 5:30 for a 7:30 surgery. This place is quite a bit different than the hospitals at home. Someone greeted us at teh door and then escorted us to the front desk.

Anyway, just pressed the pain pump and am already drowsy. Might pass out before i finish. Folks here are absolutely wonderful and I hear teh cafeteria deserts are homade and to die for. At 7:30 surgery began but I wasnt in my private room (WHOO HOO!) til 6:30 pm. Post op pain was TERRIBLE, epidural meds, IV meds, muscle relaxant not adequate for the job. Finally the staff asked what had worked at the previous surgery in kS and I found some relief with morphine. Pain escalated again when I got to my room so I've got toradol as well as the morphine pump and whatever was in my epidural. I didn't have any nauseau til 9 and then only when sitting up.

Nurses here are wonderful. Student nurse was obviouly a student. Did nt' get my CPM hooked up and couldn't figure out how to plug the ice machine (which btw, I had brought from kS) into the wall socket. But she did know how to turn on the tv and internet. :)

I'm pressing teh morph button. Nite nie

Oct 19
Not many Zs to be had beween nurses coming in and out, CPM, heel pump machine, and pain. At 3am was finally able to doze off in 15 minute segments. I was wiped out today and the anti nausea meds make me fall asleep while eating. When the epidural was removed I got to crutch down to and use the big girl potty, “stroll” down the hall, and “work out”. Dr T is allowing me 30lbs of weightbearing on the new cruiser which is so much better than the total NWB I had first been told. He did the rotation, the TTT, and freed up the patella. He did not address those darn absorbable sutures in my VMO. He said he could take those out later when he does the hardware removal.

Anyway, the workout to be done 2X a day, 2 sets of 5-10 as tolerated and concentrating on ROM:
Heel slides, heel pumps, quad sets, glute sets, SLRs, supine hip abduction/adduction, short arc extensions, and standing knee flexion (hammie) exercises.

Pain better. Nausea better. Let’s see if we can keep dinner down.
