Large Patella (Kneecap)
« on: October 05, 2007, 12:11:23 PM »
Hello,

My friend is in pain. She ran a marathon after which her knee started hurting so that she can't run anymore. The doctors say that her kneecap is very big which causes problems in her knee, but they do not know exactly what to do to make it better. Physiotherapists are trying to strengthen her muscles in her knee which is supposed to help.

Has anyone else here had the same sort of problems. If so it would be nice to hear what you have done to make your knee work again. Thanks.

Hi Pauli

You dont mention a visit to a Doctor!!!!

Very important to see an Orthopaedic Consultant to establish if there anything serious.

Best wishes

She has been to a couple of specialists. They say that her patellas are quite large and recommend surgery, which she won't do (yet) and physiotherapy which she is doing, but we are not sure if it's helpful. So I was trying to ask if someone has had the same problem as her: heavy running (or other exercise) causing large patellas to cause pain in your knee.

Hello:

I fractured my patella and had orif surgery 7 mos ago,but now my patella is much larger than the good side.  It has filled up with scar tissue and formed a huge "patella".  Actually it surrounds the patella (the scar tissue) and fills up the area inside the patellar tendon.

I asked my os about this just a week ago and he said that it is not uncommon for this to occur due to the scar tissue.  He did not mention doing anything about it, but it is so big that it feels like it rubs on the tendon beneath it on the outside of the patella in the lower portion.

What I do to make it feel better is to do daily flexion stretches (bending the knee), quad strengthening exercises such as staright leg lift with weights, massages to the region to break up scar tissue, icing as often as needed, Aleve if it is bad, patella mobilizations and partial knee squats without straining anything and now, I wear orthotics because of flat feet.  It helps to do exercises to strenthen the quads and keep them well stretched as well.

I hope this helps your friend, good luck and forgot to mention this, rest it when it hurts until it doesn't hurt and then, slowly begin exercises again.
