BLOOD VERY THICK WHEN DRAWING MY LABS TODAY....
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:31:35 PM »
Hi everyone. Just me, with yet another question to ask. I went to have my pre op blood work done today. My blood was sooo thick. It took forever to draw the labs, as it was coming out so slow and when they shook the tube, you could see that it was really thick. I said to the tech, wow my blood is really thick today. Its not like that any other time. Is this normal? And all he said was that happens sometimes.

My question is this...does your blood thicken if there is an infection in your body somewhere? I am very curious, as we are wondering about infection being one of the culprits in my knee.

If anyone can shed any light on this matter, please do so....

Thanks...

Donna

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT WHETHER BLOOD THICKENS WITH INFECTION.  I DO KNOW THAT WHEN I AM DEHYDRATED (WHICH IS FAIRLY OFTEN), IT'S REALLY DIFFICULT FOR THE TECHS TO DRAW BLOOD FROM ME.  COULD YOU HAVE BEEN A LITTLE DEHYDRATED?

Hey again Sherlock. Thanks for replying. I actually dont think dehydration is a problem at all. I am constantly drinking. It just freaked me out because usually they take tube after tube really quick. And I could see how thick it was today..even when they shook it. Weird. Of course, with surgery coming up, and the possibility that I do have infection in my knee, I am on edge anyways. So, time will tell I guess.

Thanks again...

Donna

Taking blood is never 2 times the same... It can sometimes be hard to take blood in someone where it normally goes easy, and the other way round. Don't panic, maybe they used mainly clotted tubes, or maybe the venflon (the thing you take blood with, or the needle) was sitting at the vainwall, making it difficult for the blood to run into the tubes, or maybe they used another blood taking system/tubes.

Relax and wait untill the tests come back, might well be nothing!

It could have been a bad area and the flow was slow causing the blood to start to clot which would make it look thick.  It can also cause errors in your lab values which may be why the sed rate was elevated???

Hi,

Sometimes when you have your blood taken it can look dark and may look thick depending on what bottle has been used cause some bottles are quite thick or you have a good HB.  Other problems can be if it is not taken properly or sometimes the blood may clot in the bottle of its own accord and may need to be repeated.

Don't worry if there were any problems they will have contacted you by the end of the day.

Thanks everyone. I had my type and screen done on Weds. when I had my pre op physical, and it was fine. The lab tech there said that there are numerous reasons it could have appeared, or could have been thick. But she told me not to worry....I guess Im at a paranoid point at this time, you know?

Again...thanks so much.

The most likely cause is that the blood flowed slowly as it was in a smaller vein, or they used a smaller needle size, or the tourniquet was not as tight, etc. OR they were agaist the side of the vein, and it just blowed slowly. NOT much to wrooy about that I see. Good Luck Teresa
