I suppose 6 years if you don't count growing pains as a kid.

Had my first arthroscopic 5 years ago in December.  This past July I had microfracture (same knee).  Still not recovered, but I feel better than I did a month ago!
Rt. Knee
- Microfracture on 2 lesions (2.5x2.2 and 2.2x1.0) - July 2007
- Medial Meniscus - July 2007
- Cartilage removal - December 2002

As a teenager I had "cartilage" problems and dislocating knees. The problems reached a peak at about 18 then kind of died away. Finished my training as a Sport Teacher no probs, played semi pro National League Volleyball in the UK, France and Germany - NO Knee problems!

March 1989 a kid in my ski class lost control of his skis and took me out - Right knee finished - so just over 18 years and over 20 operations to keep it in a tolerable way!

March 2006 slipped on a small piece of black ice on the pavement - took all the weight on my good left leg - result no good leg any more! 4 operations later I'm returning to work in September and will teach skiing again in December (if it snows enough ???)

So right leg 18 1/2 years
left leg 1 1/2 years

Perhaps I should go into hiding in March in the future LOL

Sue

1989 big trauma R. knee - sorted
1990-2004 3ACL recons and 20+ arthroscopies -RK
3/06 LK ACL torn!
4/06 ACL recon, kneecap broken
09 &10/06- 2x meniscus trims
3/07 - Notch Plastic & Lateral Release
14/8/08 complete revision ACL plus LCL/PLC recon
6/2/09 returned to skiing! Whoopee

All my life! Diagnosed with PFS and chondromalacia at 17, too much activity in college started up the surgeries every year to try to correct the mal-tracking. After the 4th one at age 21.. things seemed to ease up and I pretty much coasted for the next 25 years with only sometimes achey, crabby feelings. Then at 46 I tore the menisci in both knees and found out the arthritis started up in those last 6 years. Now it's all gone to heck and they're getting replaced.

Well ever since I was a little kid I complained of pain in my legs.  Since there was no obvious injury my parents didn't take my complaining seriously.  When I was 12 I dislocated my right knee...kneecap was out of place for 6 hours and I was given no pain meds. (ouch!)  When I was 13 I dislocated my left knee for the first time.  In High school my knees were not perfect, but they really didn't prevent me from doing that many things.

It had been years since I had dislocated either knee when I dislocated my right knee in 2002.  That was like the straw that broke the camel's back, its been downhill since then.  I have had numerous dislocations and subluxations of both my right and left knee for the past 5 years...more then I can count.

So I have had knee problems my whole life, but they got considerably worse in 2002.  Of course now they are so bad I cannot do any normal activities!

Saul - I feel for ya! My first was in the summer of '78 right between freshman & sophomore year of college. Luckily after the one every year (essentially), I got to coast for 25 years! Now it feels like catching up- personally, I'd rather let you win  ;)

I have been dealing with the recent issues since July 06. I had arthroscopic in September 06 and that failed within 2 months or so. After that, my only option was TTT, as I am too young for TKR. That was in March 07 and I was pretty much house bound for about 3 months. I was finally abl to able and function [somewhat] by June. About a month or so ago, I had developed severe pains in the shin and that got worse. To the point where I was put back in a full leg cast. So now, I am probably facing 1 0r 2 more minor [I hope] procedures.

Not fun  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Mine started with pf pain in 78. I had a patellar injury (subluxation with chondral fissuring) in 84. From there it has been a scope or two every few years to keep things cleaned up. Most recently, 3 surgeries in the past 9 months. The last being a TTT/modified Fuklerson 12 days ago.
So, I guess that is 29 years, and being 43, that is a lot of time. But, one thing to consider is that I am not dealing with life threatening issues for which I am thankful!

85  Plica removal, LR
