help please!!
« on: September 04, 2007, 07:17:27 PM »
i'll just give a little background history before i get to the problem, ive had no ROM for 26 weeks, ive had a arthroscopy and MUA, ive had physiotheraphy and hydrotheraphy, but nothing has helped me gain any ROM, my physios are now refusing to treat me anymore until the surgeon takes another look, the surgeon wont do anything until ive been to pain clinic on 13th september.....
now my most recent problem is my leg is feeling so heavy, im really struggling to get round, im not even going out the house on crutches anymore, im having to use a wheelchair....any ideas what this heavy feeling could be??

sorry to hear that you are struggling. Also sorry that I can't even start to guess what your heavy leg could be. I am sending a cyber hug to you though, hang in there, not to long until the 13th.........................couldm't they have offered you the 12th or 14th instead :D

Just a thought here.  My PT told me that my back may have been causing my let to feel a bit warm during treatment.  I never gave back issues a thought because I hadn't had any problems before, but once he said that I noticed that I was walking a bit funny which could have thrown my back into a different walking pattern.  I have no idea if that could be affecting your leg or in the manner you described, but it could be worth asking about.  I sincerely hope you feel better!

Regards,
Kaci

hi friendsfan,
i was thinking about you all day yesterday for some reason - wondering how you are.
I wonder if the heavy feeling is just that youve lost so much muscle from not using it that its difficult for you to support your leg anymore? I have definitely noticed since I started my new physio that I dont feel like Im dragging my leg around like a weight so much.
Its not long before your pain management appointment. Although Im sure everyday seems like an age right now.
Any news on your OS appointment?
Hugs

hi

there has been a huge mix up with the OS appointment, it turns out ive not been referred after all
so i just have to wait for this pain clinic (not sure what to expect from this)
i hope that this heavy feeling is just the muscle loss,
im scared because im sure by now my muscles and tendons would have shortened

so will you be getting referred to the new OS at all now?
if not I suggest you find yourself a new OS. go privately if you have to.

according to my OS - muscles can be rebuilt no matter what state they are in.
Tendons can and do shorten, but they can be stretched out with exercises.
Try not to worry too much about these things, you havent been years and years like this - people recover from long periods of disuse. My own tendons in my calf have shortened but they are stretching out somewhat and theyve been disused for years. And my VMO muscle was totally invisible - and its started to make a comeback too - so try not to worry!!! youve got to get that knee moving - thats your main priority!

oh i thought my VMO was dead - never to be seen again. My OS said he thought it was paralysed. Then it started to appear, and I wondered was there really any hope for it as a working muscle - could it ever recover? My OS said muscles can certainly recover, they may never reach the same bulk as before but they can be strengthened to the same strength, nerve fibres die with atrophy, but the brain reopens neuro muscular pathways and you grow new ones when you start working the muscle again - one day the number of nerve fibres reaches critical mass and youve got a working muscle again - im still awaiting that day for my VMO but my OS assures me it happens.

Whats the plan for you now - you need to see a new OS? Can you see a new one as a public patient (NHS or whatever?).
Can you afford even 1 appointment privately?
In Ireland sometimes people make a private appointment for a consultant but ask that all treatment is put through the public system so that they arent paying privately for MRI's, operations etc... The consultants generally go for the cheapest option for the patient. Ive had private appointments for other things that resulted in public hospital visits.

you poor thing.
Can you go to A&E explaining that you fell but that your knee hasnt moved in weeks and see can they refer you to a new OS?

It's that step forward that does it, well falling down after that step forward. Maybe they should invent grown up person size baby walkers, so we can walk withour falling over.

If you have caused more damage, it wouldn't hurt to go to A&E, need to make sure that things are OK. I'm afraid that in your situation I'd probably go in and turn on the 'I can't handle this anymore' water works, and pray that I got to see someone else.

More big hugs coming your way,

Denny
