Post-Op Screw Removal is Making me Crazy!
« on: August 22, 2007, 06:34:59 PM »
Hey all! So i had the screws removed from my TTT on July 11, and things seemed to be going well for awhile afterwards. However, about a week post-op i ended up on antibiotics for an infection which seemed to clear up alright. And then i ended up with a small hole in the incision that would not heal up, but my GP said that it should heal with time and to call my OS if the problem persisted. So i thought it was going well, and then last night i was towelling off after a shower and some pus shot out of the hole (which is now larger in size...), to late to call my OS or GP. So this morning i was checking it when again some pus shot out of it, at which time i realized that it was time to call the OS. I called, but he is on holidays and his nurse said to call my GP (and i go in tomorrow morning to see her). Anyway, after i made the appt i was cleaning up the wound and there was something sticking out of the hole...well low and behold it is a stitch...i tugged on it and there are knots and everything...apparently my body did not dissolve the stitches. I tugged with all my might and could not get the stitch out, so i am not sure what my GP will want to do tomorrow. Can't really leave them in there if they are not dissolving right? How common is it to have stitches try to come out when they have not dissolved? I am now sitting at like 3 weeks of having an open hole in my knee...which can't be a good thing. I guess i will figure it out tomorrow. What have others had done if there stitches tried to work their way out? I have now put a bandaid with polysporin on the hole and will do that until my appt tomorrow. Thanks for any tips, etc.

Leah,

I had bits of stitch come out of my incision about 2 months postop.  Mine wouldn't come out because of a knot.  My PT was able to help me get the piece out.  It is supposed to dissolve, but sometimes the body doesn't want to let it dissolve.  Hopefully the pus is simply nothing more than your body trying to get rid of the stitch.  Good luck with your GP tomorrow, hopefully that will sort things out for you.

After my TTO, I had to have my screw removed.  My stiches didn't dissolve for a long time.  I had some pus and whatnot.  My OS told me that the pus was just my body's way of trying to dissolve it, and to don't worry unless the pain is intense or there is evidence of infection spreading.  My wound healed eventually, but I think the stitch is still there...I can see a blue thing under the scar, but I don't feel nothing.

Thanks for the replies! I seen my GP this morning and she snipped what she what she could get ahold of and the rest of the stitch(es) are still in the knee. She said that this will likely go on for awhile, but it will heal up with time. Said not to worry about the infection, as it is going to clear up as the stitches dissolve or rise to the surface...so no worries anymore. Thanks again!!
