New with lots of ? Osteotomy, arthroscopy
« on: August 13, 2007, 02:10:12 PM »
Hi, Im new to this site and stumbled across it while searching the net. Basically I have just turned 36 and have had knee problems for the last 8 years. Whilst using a stepping machine at the gym all those years ago i jarred my knee. Went home and the knee was swollen, a week later the pain and swelling were still there and i decided to see my GP. On the first look she told me I had torn the lateral cartilage and would need surgery to fix it. I was referred to an OS and on the first meeting was told there was nothing wrong and the xrays all looked ok. I insisted that there was a problem or i wouldnt be in so much pain, swellin ect. He reluctanly sent me for an MRI whilst going on about the cost of the scan. I had the scan and it was confirmed that there were some bad tears and i would need surgery to fix it. I had the surgery and expected to go back to normal. This just didnt happen and the pain continued. At this point i asked if it was the start of osteoarthritis. My mother has it and had a knee replacement at 48. I was a bit concerned that i was heading down the same road. No one could give me a straight answer to that and i have had a few clean up athroscopys since then.  I went to see my gp again as the pain was so bad and the swelling ridiculous. I noticed also that my knee on the inside was bowing in the way, like i was knock kneed. She referred me to a more specialist hospital and i was sent for a cat scan to check the allignment of my knee. My ankles no longer meet and i am always in pain. Sometimes it is really bad and i wont tell you what i think at those times coz i know i really dont mean it. Just been and had the results of the cat scan which are showing the knee being unalligned. The surgeon wanted to put me on the list for a femural osteotomy but i want to get this right. My last arthroscopy showed that i am bone on bone on the lateral side and that my kneecap has moderate to severe degeneration and i am pretty sure that they said the medial side was showing slight degeneration. It was then decided that he would do an athroscopy (my new os) and have a look to see exactly waht the medial side looks like. I am absolutely terrified of having an osteotomy. My mother also had one and no knee surgery has ever went right for her. She is on Knee replacement no 3 (2 in 1 knee and 1 in the other) She is 58 and constantly in pain. I dont know what to do. I can of course refuse the osteotomy and wait until the knee completely wears out and spend some time in a wheelchair before i become entitled to the knee replacement. Can anyone give me any advice on this procedure? My left knee is now very painful too with slight misallignment and i know its going the same way as the other. How would i cope with the osteotomy in this position? I have a toddler as well and the os has said we can wait a year or 2 to do it. I just want to know everything i can about this from real peoples perspective? Any advice?

My advice is to research the surgeons in your area and find one that specializes in your problem. Discuss all your concerns, ask for all possible alternatives, then research the specific items. It is easier to make an informed choice when you have all the information and feel confident the recommendtions are sound. I wish you the best.

I have had 3 opinions from 3 different OS. They have all said i will need a knee replacement but too young. The osteotomy is being offered to buy some time until then. I just dont know if it will be worth it. I am sick and tired of the pain and have accepted that this is how its going to be. I am more worried about how my family will cope tbh. It would be a major upheavel to them too. On the other hand i cannot go on like this. Has anyone been offered the osteotomy and refused and waited for the KR? If so how bad did it get and at what point did you get the KR?
