From arthroscopic surgery to IT band pain?
« on: August 13, 2007, 02:21:56 AM »
I had a simple arthroscopic surgery 10 days ago for debridement of the patella....and ever since the surgery, up to now, the outside of my thigh is sore as hell. I am assuming that is the IT band....how did an arthroscopic surgery cause a sore IT band? Anyone have an idea or have a similar experience?

I had IT band syndrome before discovering that I had a meniscus problem.

I had patella debridement and meniscus trimming 3.5 weeks ago.  My IT Band has been hurting more since surgery. I attribute this to the fact that the polar care icing unit does not cover the IT Band, and I keep forgetting to do the ITB stretch.

I am spending a lot of time with knee nearly straight, and leg elevated - this makes me need to stretch hamstring, and that position may also be doing that to the IT band.

Tightening of the IT band after surgery is a pretty common problem. Have you told your PT about it? There are stretches and massage that can be done to loosen it up.

I've been complaining about my IT band being tight too! My PT uses a hard rod to roll over the area (you can do it at home too, they said) and they do hand massage it too. I also do stretches to help get it looser. Before you do anything, ask your PT if it's okay.

Yeah I have been massaging with my hands and using the foam roller. I will be seeing my PT on friday. Also, how long did your swelling persist after the arthroscopic surgery? Mine doesnt seem to be getting any better :<

Hi - I had arthroscopic surgery X2 and had swelling each time that lasted about 2 months off and on.  Took a long time for the saline to absorb, I was told.  Actually the swelling was kind of ok because it created some cushion where I don't have any more cartilage.  Ice and elevation was my friend!  IT band tightness is something I deal with off and on now too - massage and stretching and not sitting all day long help.  My PT and massage therapist showed me some stretches that I do.  I have this (unfounded) theory that our leg muscles just work so hard to stabilize and protect ourjoints when we have these issues, all kinds of weird things start happening that we didn't have before.  I feel like  :-\spend most of my time taking care of these pore ol' legs! :-\
