Worsening Pain in My Knee....
« on: August 05, 2007, 02:18:51 AM »
First of all,  hello!  This is my first post here.  It looks like a nice community, so I thought I'd join.  I apologize if this is not in the correction section.....so feel free to move it if it is.

I am 24 years old and used to be very active in sports, but haven't been for awhile now.  In my teen years I played basketball, softball, and was on my HS's cross country team.  When I was about 14 I injured my knee very badly playing basketball... basically I was pummeled into the ground by two girls who landed on me, landing on my left knee and elbow.  I didn't get up right away...but eventually did and kept playing that night.  It hurt, but I continued to play.  Yes, I am stupid like that.... always have been.  So later when I got home I noticed my knee swelled up...it looked awful, and was bigger than I'd ever seen it.  It also turned a very dark purplishish/black/blue color around the entire knee....front, sides, and back.  I couldn't walk on it due to the swelling, and it hurt.  So I went to ER and they looked at it.  They said I had a severe sprain, and sent me home on crutches.  I went back a week or so later when the initial swelling subsided, and they didn't do anything. They just said I had a sprain... no referall to a specialist, no MRI, nothing!  To be honest, my parents just happened to have kinda crappy Kaiser Permanente health insurance then (they had it for about a year before switching to something much better)... and I don't think I ever received proper treatment.  And as such, my knee has never felt normal since that incident.  I've always had some popping and cracking sounds and general weakness and mild daily pain.

A couple years later I injured my shoulder, went to the doctor, and found out I had torn my rotator cuff and damaged surrounding tissues due to not going to the doctor right away, and still using it.  So anyways, when I saw the orthopedic surgeon, he was bending my other joints around and told me I have looser than normal joints and am more susceptible to injury.  I am further convinced of my loose joints after having problems with my wrist area for the past year as well... I tore a ligament

So now.... 10 years after my initial knee injury... I am having major problems.  I fell on the stairs the other day, although my knee did not start to give me problems until about 2 days later.  Now, for the past 2 weeks my knee is moving around weird, feels extremely weak, and is constantly catching and locking.  It is so awful.  The catching/locking thing happens when I get up from a seated position, when I straighten out my leg, or even sometimes when walking..... and when it happens, I double over in pain and clutch my knee and have nearly fallen over....  Also, sitting ... if I touch my kneecap, it moves slightly...like a creaking type weird feeling.  It moves when i touch it from any angle..even pressing down directly on it lightly, it gives a bit.  It doesn't hurt when I do that though. And walking, it does not feel stable...it feels wobbly and like it will just give out at any moment.  If I squat or knee down, I feel instant pain....when getting up, my knee pops.  The majority of the pain seems to be coming from somewhere right in the middle of my knee..further back than my actual kneecap, and also sometimes at the bottom of my knee.  Oh, also...there is some sort of muscle I feel in the middle of my knee that has been spasming lately.

I work downtown in a big city, so I have to do some decent walking to and from the parking lot each day, my desk is on a 2nd level mezzanine so I have to climb steps, and because I work in a library, I have to do a lot of walking around and climbing stairs up into the stacks.  It is really bothering me, and the more I walk around, the worse it feels.

I saw my primary physician 2 weeks ago when it first started really bothering me.  She looked at it and said she could see the swelling, bent it around, and said "it seems like a cartilage issue".  She had xrays done to make sure nothing was wrong with the bones and whatnot.  Those looked ok I guess cuz they didn't tell me they found anything.  So she prescribed me some anti-inflammatories and sent me home.  She told me to come back in 2 weeks if it still bothered me and she would look at it again and then refer me to a specialist.  So  I am going in Monday afternoon.  I know she can't do anything really.....other than refer me..so I know the whole appt. isn't going to get anything accomplished. Argh!

Has anyone experienced anything like this?  If so, what ended up being your problem?  What do you think may be wrong with me?

I am wondering if my injury from when I was younger may have been some kind of tear of meniscus or a ligament...and that coupled with my tendancy to have loose joints, I really messed it up...

Im not looking forward to seeing an orthopedic surgeon either.. I've seen two in the past, and neither was friendly or listened much at all, which is why I chickened out on having my shoulder operated on... I did not trust them with the way they were. I am hoping to get someone better this time.

Thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome to our  community nice to have you here

To answer your ?s In my opinion you need to see and os right away I would doubt that this injury is from your younger years but to be on the safe side go to an os and get it checked out asap if you dont like the os that you have seen before ask around or you can go to rankmd.com and see who is in your area and go from there but you really need to have it checked out so you dont do further damage or cause more issues for yourself

good luck and let us know how you are doing

Thanks for that site... I will check it out. :)  I definitely don't want the same OS's that I was referred to before.

While I'm waiting to get an appt. with the OS, do you think it would be a good or bad idea to wear a knee brace or anything when I do lots of walking or standing?  I have a couple laying around from when I hurt my right knee once.

Just based on past experiences, I think it'll likely be a few weeks before I can even get in for an appt.  They always seemed to be booked.  Unless knees are more of a concern than shoulders and wrists. :P

How long does it normally take you to get in at an OS and actually get a diagnosis?
