STILL waiting for a referral....... and getting FED UP
« on: August 04, 2007, 03:52:46 AM »
It is SO FRUSTRATING knowing I could go directly to an OS if I needed to.......... but NOOOOOOO, this is a blasted Workman's Comp case *sigh*

It's been two weeks now since I fell on my knee.

The swelling has gone down quite a bit but still remains somewhat swollen around my knee. Bruising has also started to diminsh, although I still seem to get slight bruising here and there that just doesn't seem to go away, but at least it's not too dark and gory looking as it had been. I still do get swelling in my lower leg, starts in the afternoon and just goes from there. I stay off my feet in the afternoon, but I'm just in bed or on the sofa with my legs up, I'm not laying down though.

My knee is still completely NUMB in the front. About a 4" circle right at my knee. No feeling when I touch it, however the pressure of touch will cause pain "inside" the knee. The skin in this area is noticeably darker than the rest. This part concerns me.

I can straighten my leg (aches just a little in the back, nothing major), but I cannot bend it more than ever so slightly. Strange sensations, pain, and a lot of pressure in the front and back. This part concerns me.

My knee/lower leg feels loose when it's not in the brace - the only time I feel this is in the shower (can't wear the brace there - have no choice), otherwise it's secured either in a brace or the somewhat less secure, but still semi-steady in the ace bandages the hospital ER sent me home with (I prefer to sleep in the ace bandage and wear the brace during the day though).

Xrays on the 20th in the Er as well as those done today showed no fractures (ok this is a good thing).

I have the MRI scans on two discs, which I transferred to my PC - but the "reading" of the MRI won't get to the doc until Monday (I will go in on Tuesday for that conference). I've looked at them on my laptop, but all I see is pretty cool images without a clue as to what it all means. I really hate having the information right here....... and not know what it means! LOL!

All I want is a referral to an OS...... someone that knows more about the inside of my knee than a GP does. Again, that's workman's comp for you. They want to take the cheap route and if a GP can fix it, they will let them. To make matters worse, the only GP I can see is at a "walk in clinic" - they are the only ones "on the list" of approved doctors. The "approved doctors" are the only ones that can do the referral. The last two appointments with the clinic doctors - she didn't even TOUCH MY KNEE. No testing, nothing. Just all talk. I've already voiced my concerns to them. Actually I put it in writing and they added my statement to their file.

When I go back to the doc on Tuesday to discuss the MRI reading, if it doesn't result in a referral, I'm going to raise hell and start pulling some of those strings I know I can pull to get action done. This is just rediculous.

It's probably too late, but if it were me I would have gone straight to my OS and just not told my employer. I won't ever tell them if I get hurt at work for just this reason. Maybe if I cut myself and needed stitches or something but not if I injured a limb. I'd want my own OS.

I'm afraid I couldn't get out of not telling them.... I was at the front door and just managed to make it to my office, but not before they all saw me. Hindsight is 20/20 I know, it can't help me at this point. It's a little more than just a regular fall though, there was error on the contractor's side for leaving a dangerous area unmarked and unblocked.

Hi Sandy, Just to say I feel for you with your frustration, the waiting is the worst part isn't it. Your Doctors must of trained at the same place as mine, he also seems to be reluctant to actually touch my knee, just looks from a distance and talks, a little, and writes a lot down ::) Maybe it's some kind of new training program.

Figers crossed that you get your referral soon.

Sandy, I once fell at work on water right by the elevator doors. The guard helped me up the elevator and to my desk.  I then went directly to my own doctor.  Later work made me go to their doctor for a second consultation.  My insurance covered the first appointment.  She wanted an MRI because of pain, and my workmen's comp doctor was kind of forced to agree.  All in all, I would go see my private doctor is you are not getting results from work. Also call your HR department and say that the workmens doctor is screwing you around.  They usually react if they are a good company.

Thanks for the idea Kimmy. It was actually the HR person that came to my aid first and called the WC company to find out what hospital they need to take me to (we have two in town)........ although she will also be the first to chew out the WC company if they don't produce results quick. WC is making her jump through all sorts of hoops right now...... making sure I get complete assistance entering and exiting the building, etc LOL! Poor gal :(  I will let her loose on the company if Tuesday's appointment doesn't go as planned.

Sandy,

I totally feel your frustration!!! I had a work injury on 06/10 when I slammed my knee into a pull out drawer under a cash register. I have seen 2 GPS, 2 OS, physical therapy for 8 weeks (presently), and 1 physio. So Im sticking with the one GP and physical therapy, however, the other workmans comp drs said there was nothing wrong with me. They wouldnt listen when I showed them the tilt in my knee cap and the 2nd os didnt even look at my sunrise x ray (which shows a big patella tilt and mild subluxation!). I went to a physiotherapist who said he didnt believe anything was wrong with me and treated me like dirt (workmans comp dr!) I told my GP I wasnt going back to a dr that talked to me like that and he agreed.
Now my GP is referring me to another physio who is debating on whether he wants to see me based on my workmans comp file, which doesnt include the tilted patella x ray that no specialist has taken the time to review. My GP is very symphatic, however, knees arent his speciality and besides noting a problem there is little he can do.
My initial swelling has gone down, however, now I have immense pain after basic physical therapy, and everytime I walk straight (which I have just now been able to do) my knee pops out of place. I just wanted to post to let you know the absolute frustration I am going through, I wish there was some way I could have taken out my short term disability and just filed on my own inusrance. Be very careful, I have met some drs who just work for workmans comp, they dont listen and they overlook things.. I wish you much luck with getting a referral! Im certain they will refer  you to an OS, it took about 4 weeks for them to refer me to one. Stay positive and understand that the workmans comp insurance is like a bad HMO, you have to get approval and referrals for everything!

Much luck and I hope you dont run into the frustration I have!

Thanks caren - when I get the ability to PM I will certainly do so LOL! It seems I can receive them but cannot send or reply just yet. Ah well, all in good time.

Knee-will-be-great -- Thanks for the info you sent me in PM - it really supercharged me into doing some research (I am also one of those research nuts because I like to be as informed as I can get). Naturally I cannot "assume" what I see in my MRI is a fact (only those qualified to read them can do that) - but I can yell you one thing, where there should be an ACL, it's pure fuzz. I've compared my images to MANY MANY online MRI images of knees with intact ACL as well as knees with problems with the ACL and the ones that look literally identical to mine are the ones that are ruptured. So, I can only wait for the official diagnoses now. I also saw something possibly troubling on the outside ligaments as well, but those were harder for me to really tell because the comparison shots I found online, nothing looked similar to mine, so I can't say one way or the other.

The only other thing that is frustrating the hell out of me is apparently the ibuprofen is contributing to high blood pressure. I am supposed to take 800 mg three times a day. I take it twice - once mid-morning and once at night when I take my Lortab (so I can get a good night's sleep). The last good level of blood pressure I had was when I was in the ER - since then it's been around 142 over 92, which is technically "high" - the only time in my life I had high blood pressure was 12 years ago during my last pregnancy. Just one of those things I guess I need to watch and make sure the OS I get a referral to doesn't blow it off (like this GP did when I mentioned it).

Hi Sandy,

I too feel your pain.  I lost my WC case almost a year after I was injured.  Lucky for me my private ins. picked up and so did my short term.  Just remember, an MRI does not show all injures.  Mine was actually missread (which is what booted me from WC) and when it was properly read I was sure that I would picked back up.  Well since I had to take it court I guess not.  Bitter - oh not me!!! Its now going on three years and I'm now facing PKR because the original injury caused my OA to really kick in to high gear.  It can be frustrating and as Caren can attest to also, don't let the @#$#@$ wear you down.  That is their trick.  They hope they will throw so much your way that you'll just give up and go away.  Here is a funny thing - after I went to court the opposing attorney offered me a job because I did such a good job presenting my case and putting my paperwork in order.  I told him, in no uncertain terms I told him he sat on the wrong side of the table and if he ever decided to join the right side and represent those like me who were fighting the insurance companies I would be happy to consider his offer.  I don't think he liked me before we went to the hearing and he definately didn't like me after I said that.  Oh, I'm so sad about that...yea right.

Anyway, I hope you are medically taken care of soon.  No one should have to deal with their stupidity and be held up from care.  I will be thinking about you and watching for an update.

Take care and stay strong - vent here anytime.

Deborah
