air conditioning
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:30:21 PM »
hi there,
i had a VMO advancement,LR and medial reefing done in late January 07.
i work in an office where there is air conditioning, also as it is "summer" most of the windows are also open all day.
is it just me or does anyone else really feel the cold since surgery?
as i do a sit down job and am stuck at my desk all day i cannot move around to get warm.
i have mentioned this to the boss at work and the HR department and to be honest feel as though i'm been fobbed off.
and its not just me who sits in my coat all day either!
the effect it has on my knee is pain and incredible stiffness and discomfort.
its just been one of those days today where i have mentioned it and i am finding it a problem and feel i was made to feel unreasonable!
any ideas/suggestions/similar comments please!!

i had a motorcycle accident-landed on right knee!(mar 05)
...arthroscopy - 4th feb 06.
...VMO Advancement,LR+JMedial reefing - 24th jan 07.
...28 feb 07 i fell down 14 stairs.....more pain and stress!
...now at PT working on ROM and strenghening

I freeze all the time.  It has gotten worse with each surgery.  My suggest for you is to keep a jacket handy.  I wear my work clothes and the add a fleece jacket when my boss gets the office to cold for me.  My doctor tells me it is just one of many strange thing that can happen when they cut a person open.  He can't tell me why though.  ???
If I knew I'd be like this now, I'd do it all again.
1998- Lf ACL replace (failed)
1998- Lf ACL replace (worked)

1999- Rt Scope
2000- Rt ACL replace

2009- Rt clean-out the mess
To Come: 2 Replace

Just keep a sweatshirt or something at the office. And put a blanket on your knee. That's what I do. It's far more miserable to be hot than cold. I would not wish to make my coworkers suffer on my account. You can always put on more clothes. That being said, air conditioning doesn't bother my joints. Cold, wet, rainy days are what kills me.

Management or anyone should not speak to you like that, they have a duty of care for all their staff. Do you have a union?

Hey Claire-  Sorry your boss is a pin head.  The cold seeps into the joint and it HURTS!  Maybe he could be a good candidate for a whack with a crutch.  I'll loan you one of mine, it's the good old fashioned kind, underarm and solid wood!  As far as unions go, here in the US you would have to join the one at your current employer.   I had a meat locker of an office and would wear half gloves, a sweater, and a blanket.  Sometimes I would even throw on a scarf.  It got the point accross.  It's not our management that is the problem for us, it's our Facilities Management folks.  Take care.

Claire, sorry to hear that you have an idiot for a manager, but he needs to be careful, in this situation you are strong, and he is putting himself in a weak place. You really need to start recording times dates and what was said, with your meeting with HR, and also what the manager says. If you want to join a union thats great, and I would choose one who has good resources, if you choose the one at work, ask yourself if you can work with the shop steward or other reps, if not go for one that covers your industry.

I feel very strongly about this, I have been a shop steward, way back in the distant past, and before we moved out here I was a manager for many years. I strongly believe in the right of a person to work in an environment that is comfortable for them, and within reasonable bounds, this is what should be provided for every person.

I'm struggling not to go off on one of my 'high horse' tangents at the moment, as I type this I'm bl**dy angry, managers should not be allowed to behave like this, and something should be done about it, apart from the union, you could try another direct approach to HR a documented discussion of events really should take place here, and even if you are not in the union, you should be allowed a supporter from within the company to be there. Another avenue is to talk to the good old CAB, they sometimes have have bright ideas.

Good luck, email me on this one if you like.

hey claire- blokes really do seem to cope with the cold better than us women - I know boss is the first to put the aircon on - while we freeze - luckily we have  fleeces to wear if we need them - even though they are all one size - extra large - so they go down to our knees!

Your boss needs to show more respect to his employees!!  ( a*&Seh*le ;D)
