Help...I just fell...need advice
« on: July 20, 2007, 03:01:33 AM »
Hi!
I've had alot of problems with my knee, but never pain like this. I am currently scheduled for a lateral release on my left knee for september 3 and today at work I was walking up the stairs when my left knee gave out and I fell right on my kneecap. There was immediate swelling and I can hardly move without it feeling like someone is shoving knives in my knee. I cannot walk at all without crutches. I called my OS and I can't get in until tuesday and my boyfriend told me that I am being overdramatic...Should I just go to the ER in the morning? I have zero stability and I really need to work.

Thanks for your help

I would suggest going to the ER if the swelling and pain are not gone.  A fall on the kneecap is one of the few ways that break a patella.

First I'd dump that insensitive clod of a boyfriend, then I'd haul my butt up to the ER. Kimmy is right, you could have fractured your patella. JMHO.

pain happens for a reason, to alert you to the fact that you have damaged something, and to stop you from using something that is damaged.

If you got a lot of pain - go to the ER.

And smack the boyfriend in the kneecap with a hammer and see how dramatic he gets :)

Thank you guys so much for the quick answers...
i went to the ER this morning and the xray shows a displaced patella fracture. At that point i called my OS and I have an appointment today (funny how i couldnt get in until tuesday before) and he wants to do an MRI as well...he is worried i may have torn my pcl

thanks again for the advice

i might just have to dump that insensitive clod  :)

I've never had an OS (or any doctor) that wouldn't give me a same day appointment in an emergency. The only exception is if they are in surgery on that day. But one time my surgeon's office told me to go to the ER where he was in surgery and he would meet me there in between surgeries.

Amy,
Sorry to hear that you did injure your patella, but glad that you ignored the soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend and got it checked out. Good luck with your OS visit and let us know how you make out.
