I stabbed my leg
« on: July 10, 2007, 04:35:13 AM »

Several months ago while wood carving, I slipped and stabbed myself in the leg. About six inches above me knee. It bleed extremely bad, and I didn't see a Dr. .However, I began to develop some problems. My leg began to ache, lateral and just above the knee. If I put my hand on it, I can feel it's swollen, but really, I can't see that it's swollen. Shortly afterwards, under my knee started hurting. It hurts to walk up and down the stairs and is getting worse everyday. Now, it hurts just to hurt, walking, sitting, standing, it makes no difference, it just hurts. On top of this I started having pain radiate up my leg, which I found odd. Then one day, I put on my shoes, (heals) and it was the worst pain I had every experienced. The pain was like shock waves, and they wouldnít stop. They radiated up my leg even after I removed my shoes. It lasted the entire night. I have one other sign, and I donít know if itís related or not. But the bottom of my foot itches and has for about the same amount of time. I canít see anything wrong with it but itís about to drive me insane. Now, to make this story almost funny, I hadnít carved since I stabbed myself. But I just couldnít take it anymore, itís a passion. So, I decided I was going to carve again about a month ago. I got out all my tools and as I picked up the knife I stabbed myself with in the first place, I dropped it, and it landed right in my foot on the same leg. LOL kind of funny I guess.  Anyway, Iíve had an ultrasound, and it showed no signs of a blood clot. Iíve had an x-ray and it was normal as well. If someone could point me in the right direction Iíd appreciate it. The thing is, that although I work from home, I work a lot. So when I go back to the Dr. I like to be able to say, ďI did a little research and maybe we should look at thisĒ. Iíve been reading the post on here and I think this is the right place for me to start.

i would definatley see your GP asap who should refer you to a specialist.i would not like to hazard a guess as to what has happened internally from the accident but there is alot in there that can be damaged inside.
could it be nerve/tendon damage??

That's just the problem. I went to see my family doctor. He ordered an ultrasound to check for a blood clot and it came back ok. Also, he ordered and x-ray which also came back ok. I feel like, since those two test came back ok, he isn't taking it seriously anymore. I"m not sure where to go from here. I do plan on seeking a different GP and have my leg looked at furthur, but I'm not made of money. I've searched and searched the internet for a possible reason for this pain, but to no avil. The closest I've come to finding something that fit my symptons was Giant Cell tumor. But I really believe it has something to do with my stabbing my leg and not from some new illness.

You probably need to se an OS, just to be on the safe side.  You need at least a manual knee exam and maybe and MRI.

Good luck

An MRI would certainly be a good next step. From your description of the radiating pain, it sounds like nerve damage is a very real possibility - and you could well have damage to tendons or muscles, none of which would show on an xray. A GP is only going to be able to provide you with help on this up to a point; you should also push for a referral to a specialist.
