Seeking Advice for Knee Pain, HELP
« on: July 09, 2007, 07:38:36 AM »
Hi,

I am a 20 yr old male with a naggy knee pain on my left leg. To give you some history, it all started when I started practicing Karate. After 6 months, I started getting some pain just above my knee on the muscle. This was because of overuse and soon got better with some rest.

But a month later I started getting pain just below my knee cap. I was limping and took a break frm Karate. I went to the Doctor and he said it was some cartilage damage owing to Karate and suggested some ketoprofen gel along with a break of 2 weeks frm Karate. I paid heed and my knee was better. After 2 months of training my left knee again started to nag again.(my rite is fine)

After a 1 week off training, the knee was seemingly getting better. But due to  some events, I happened to be kicked right on my aching knee, not very hard tho. Its been 2 days since this happened, but my knee is really in bad shape now. But the pain is not a lot, its just naggy and I am just limping to avoid further damage.

I have been taking glucosamine for a month now. My worry now is should I go to the doc again to get things checked or would a weeks rest from physical activities be enough to get things back to normal.

I hope to seek advice from the wise folks here. I apologise for the long story, but i m just trying to give you the complete information.

Looking forward to your help.

Cheers

PS - My knee also creaks and cracks quite a bit. This worries me even more.:(

Hi

Your knee is a very valuable limb - DONT hesitate, get to see your Doctor ASAP and establish what is causing your problem.   You may require a MRI scan.

Best wishes

Hello Krtpain

I totally agree with John42, get to a dr. so they can figure out why it is cracking and creaking. Just had surgery (scope with Lateral release) and I am still recovering so make sure you get to your dr. and take it easy on that knee.

Good luck

Hey guys,

thanks fr ur concern. I visited the doctor who has given me some ketoprofen gel and some pain killers. I just recently just checked the net for further info abt ketoprofen. i believe it also is a kind of pain reliever, nothing much else. So i wonder why i havent been given anything that helps me cure the problem.

The doc dint reveal too much about what the exact problem is. However, since i visited him 4 days bak, things have been improving. I m able to walk slightly normally but i have lots of muscle pain all around my knee. cud anyone suggest any exercises to help me get over this.

hope to seek ur advice.

thanks

if i were you, id be going to a different knee doctor. i went into my knee doc two years ago with similar problems and i had physical therapy and then i had knee surgery to correct a lateral release and a meniscal tear- and now im going to have a fulkerson osteotomy in two weeks.  you doctor should have sent you to get an mri of the knee in case theres something wrong, sending you homme with pain meds shouldnt be the answer.

I feel the same way, but to be fair, the Doc did ask me to come back for another apointment a week later. I presume he s waiting to see if the problem subsidises with time. He is a masters in sports medicine, so im really hoping he ll help me out.

But im really curious to know what exactly my problem is. My knee creaks but doesnt swell, not too much pain. I would really love to know what this is and hopefully find more info and avoid things which will aggravate it.

I already have a few methods to help me get over this pain after scourgin the net
1. knock off a few kilos
2. start strength training my legs in particular
3. put off karate for a while (2-3weeks)

what do u guys suggest, ever heard of such symptoms? how abt my plans to improve the situation, nething u wud suggest.

I see a lot of people here have really suffered with their knee and i really appreciate how u genuinely like to help others avoid the same.

God bless.

Hi there,

I totally agree with kaie10. To give you some gel is no answer. Just because he is a master in sports medicine doesn't mean anything. Like any profession there are sports doctors/physician and sports doctors/physicians. It is important to go to someone that specialises in knees.

One thing I'd definitely start doing is building up the muscles around your knee. You can do this by riding an exercise bike in a gym. Just make sure it's not too sore to do this. You could also look at going to see a physio that specialises in knee problems to give you some exerices to strengthen your knees. Am really surprised that your doctor hasn't referred you for physio yet. Also quite alarmed that no scans of any sort have been done yet.

I've been to hell and back with my knees and suggest you get onto it sooner rather than later. Whereabouts are you based ? :)
