To Elevate or Not?
« on: June 25, 2007, 06:51:14 PM »
I have two fractures in my tibia plateau and a 7 degree crook in my leg. I struggle with how much time to keep my leg elevated to keep down the swelling (with an ice pack) and how much time to try and lay it flat to help with straightening it. Does anyone else have experience with this?

Thanks,
Martha

The best person to ask is the doctor that is treating you. S/he is the only one with complete details about your injury and access to your medical records.

Are you able to use some pillows to elevate your foot, allowing your knee to rest without anything below it?  That way gravity can do some work for you.  I would check with your OS before doing anything different, just to make sure you don't do any damage.

Thanks for the replies. Since I fractured my ankle as well, I can't put anything under it to help with the knee pulling down. It creates an intense pain in my ankle.

I have asked both my PT and OS - both haven't been clear about a routine to keeping my leg up or down. I'll have to rethink my question to them and ask for more speciifics.

Hi Martha,  you may want to post in the specialist section under bone breaks around the knee.  Many of the active members there have TPF injuries, sometimes combined with other injurys as well.  They may be able to help you out a bit.  They have either been in or currently are in the same boat.
6/03/89 - First Knee Cap Disclocation
7/05/89 - Returned to work
6/17/06 - Tramatic Knee Cap Dislocation and Vertical Fractured Patella
6/28/06 - ORIF - Screws - no wires
8/24/06 - Ditched the brace - start PT
9/20/06 - First spinning
1/15/07 - screw removal, LR , VMO Advanc  & patella cleanupl
