MRI today - do they give results there and then?
« on: June 22, 2007, 10:26:23 AM »
Hi - just wondering if they give you the results of your MRI immediately or do they get sent to your OS or what happens with them?
Ive an MRI at 2pm today - I dont even know if they need time to process them.
1986 - recurrent dislocations of right patella began
1988 - Modified Hauser Procedure

I think in every place the system is different.

In the UK I had to wait to receive my results from my OS and then beg for a copy of the diagnosis! Here in Germany the radiographer/doctors seem to interpret them then and there and give you a verbal explanation with a detailed written report being sent to your doctor. When I have MRI done in hospitals the report is sent directly to the surgeons and I only got a report from the surgeon if he bothered to tell me.

You can always ask for a report can't you? Maybe they will do an interpretation directly after the scan is complete, it is on the computer system so anyone of the attending doctors/specialists could interpret the pictures I would think. But remember they are NOT infallible. Meniscus tears, for example are notoriously difficult to pinpoint.

Thanks Sue - I had a feeling it was probably different everywhere.

I guess Ill just ask them for the report there and then and if they say its getting sent directly to OS then so be it - I can ask him for a copy afterwards....

Im not depending on it for a diagnosis - my diagnosis is that my knee is completely unstable because of my complete lack of a VMO and that physio is the way forward. He wants the MRI to check what kind of damage Ive done inside from my 150 dislocations in the past 2 years :)
Theres all sorts of crunching/clicking/grinding in there but its like that since surgery 18 years ago - he is behaving in a very unconcerned manner about it - then again Im not complaining about it either, a bit of crunch/click/grind is small beans compared to all my dislocations!!! He is more concerned about checking what kind of ligament damage i have - if any........

If I manage to get it stable Ive no doubt Ill be back complaining about my various crunches/clicks and grinds :)

A doctor at the office where the MRI was done had to read mine so there was a time lapse between when it was done & when the results were at my doctor's office. If I remember correctly, it was close to a week...Ellie

Hi Tanyap,
I have an MRI scheduled for this afternoon and will get the results when I see my OS on Wednesday. This is my sixth one and I've had turnaround times as little as two days. However, that may be due to the fact that my OS' office is located at the hospital where I'm having the MRI done. Good luck with yours. BTW, I'm from the US. Turnaround times here are vastly different from those in the UK, as I've found out from reading other people's posts.

They might give you the films but not the results. They have to be read by a radiologist first and then s/he has to write a report and send it to your doctor. You can ask for that report when it's done or get it from your doctor.

The place I go always gives me the films to take to the doctor then they fax the report to him within a day or two.

HI all,
thanks for your replies.
Well they gave me the films but are sending the report along to my OS on Monday - so when I see him on August 9th I can get a copy off him.
It was just my luck that the machine broke before my turn and they had to get an engineer down to fix it, ended up waiting round for 3 hours but a nice little lady took me to the hospital restaurant and gave me a voucher for tea and biscuits :)
I fell asleep during it, they mentioned my tattoo might heat up and gave me a button to press if i got panicky or my tattoo got hot. I lay down, went in machine, shut my eyes and what seemed like 10 seconds later a medical staff member woke me asking was I ok - i was like 'huh? what? has it started?'. She started laughing and just said 'so the tattoo was ok then?'.
Can you believe it? Asleep in the MRI machine - i was dreaming i was on a plane.......

I got skyline x-rays done too - my bad knee (right) looks real strange compared to my left, its like the patella is squashed right down - theres no gap between it and the groove it sits in - I dont know if its because its riding high compared to the other one or because whatever should be between it and the groove isnt there or what - but I got a chill when I looked at it.

How are people posting x-rays here - are they taking pics of them while lit from behind then uploading the pics? Id like to get my skyline x-rays up for someone to advise me on.

My husband can fall asleep in an MRI. Not me, I have to have an open MRI because I hate the tube.

I don't know how other people post their x-rays but my doctor's office is all digital. All the pictures go straight to a computer and if I want a copy they just put it on a CD for me. It's great stuff, from there I was able to email them to friends and family.

I had to wait for them to call me with my results. I never got to see the MRI until a couple months later, when i went to an OS, and he read them in front of me. I had to wait a day or two, to hear my results.

hope everything is well,

I had to wait for my results as well. The anticipation just about killed me-LOL! I have 3 tattoos and they never mentioned anything to me about them getting hot...hmmmmm. Glad it went fast for you!
