absolutely - the more muscle you build up before surgery - the quicker you'll recover after.
1986 - recurrent dislocations of right patella began
1988 - Modified Hauser Procedure
1991 - dislocations started again
2005 to 2007 - 150 dislocations in 2 years - OUCH!!!
June 2007 - new OS, new physio
Oct 2007 - VMO woke up
Mar 2008 - big quads, still dislocating
Apr 2008 - next OS app

yes...they say that (and I am a victim of it), if you don't have the muscles, it will be very difficult to gain ithem after.  Make sure to get your range of motion and extension too!  I have had 3  surgeries, and a 4th on the way, and I think it all could have been avoided had I been in good shape before the surgery.

I should change my username to this, because I say it so often, but swimming! Its a great preparation and will also be useful afterwards once your incisions have healed.

Good luck,
Lorraine.

Hi Robbie,

Get an physio assessment and advice on a good way to build up your muscles. First concentrate on full extension and full range of motion. I saw physio twice a week pre op and also used the stationary bike and rower in the local gym - My physio specifically forbade me to use any machines unless cleared by him. For example I was only allowed on the rower after 1 1/2 weeks when he assessed my ROM as being sufficient and the mcl twist had stabilised. For free standing exercises - the one I think helped a lot was stadning on the bad leg and passing an item around me, around the legs, over the shoulder, any which way it would go and finally when I could, placing it on the ground with one hand, standing up the bending down and picking it up with the other. I place the item as far out, around etc as I could reach. I am almost 6 weeks post op and this is an exercise I will now be coming back to.

Good luck
