Two stage knee revision due to MRSA
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:24:15 AM »
Has anybody else out there had to go through a two stage knee revision due to infection?
I caught an MRSA infection in my TKR during patella resurfacing surgery in October and have been through this and am trying to piece together what my future may be like with this knee. Its only been 5 weeks since I had the latest knee put in and I have a button trying to bond with my very eaten away patella. My surgeon has mentioned removing the patella altogether. I have so little bend and mobility now anyway I am not sure what difference that would make - good or bad.
Am trying to keep smiling but life has been pants for months now.   :)
Best regards
Lyndsay

hi lyndsay!!
im so very sorry to hear of the problems you are having and how horrible the last few months have been for you,i'm sorry i cannot answer your questions but wish you lots of luck in the future and hope you can get some relief from your knee problems, knee pain from an operation in general is bad enough without having to put up with the infection aswell.
you are doing so well to keep smiling!! (and keeping your humour!  :) ;).....love the pig joke at the bottom of your post!!  ;D :D)
............even though i cannot help you question wise, feel free to come on here to vent, scream, cry etc etc,we all have and it really helps.
take care and sending you a cyber hug!!

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Never thought the MRSA thing would happen to me. Its been hell. Am hanging in there. The pig thing is true.

I'm near Malton. You must have got the best of the weather today.
And you can't teach my pig anything! He knows it all already :D
Looking back I have my theories about how I contracted the infection - during an aspiration at an outpatients clinic. The symptoms were slow in showing themselves and I had no idea I had it until xmas time.
Will you ever ride a bike again?

Well done you, driving again. Its a milestone. Do you walk with sticks or do you manage without? Isn't it a bummer how everything feels like hard work.
My knee became very hot, swollen, lumpy and harder than normal to bend. This got worse over about 3 weeks. Then it got blisters on it, and ultimately it went quite black and solid to the touch. It was very scary. Never had a consultation where amputation was suggested before. That just floored me.  :o
Yes, Flamingo Land is about ten minutes from my house - Brid is a bit further. Did you have fish and chips and candy floss? We went to Scarborough for the same last weekend for a treat. I am still in a wheelchair for outings longer than 100 yards. My two kids are relentless with their Little Britain sketches - using me as the main prop!!  ;D
I miss riding my bike. I used to take my dogs out everyday on it. Its stuff like that I wonder if I'll ever get back again. At the moment it feels like I won't and thats ok if thats how it has to be. But I can start to make plans with what I have got. I'm a hairdresser and I had a good mobile business built up. Would love to get back to that.

hey!
i am a hairdresser too!!
i stopped doing it for a living just over 2 years ago and now do office work,i worked for someone else in hairdressing so the pay was very poor.
i earn alot better money now and luckily i am being paid for being off,i should be returning to work on tuesday.i only got my scooter as it was cheaper then a car when i did hairdressing!!
yes we did the fish and chips thing at brid,im not into candy floss though but we got an icecream!!
i have a dog too and loved taking him out,i cannot hold his lead yet as he pulls me too much but i am going to attempt to take him on the local park near me in the car then i don't have to be pulled all over the place as i don't need the lead!!
i still use one crutch as my knee often gives out on me when im walking and causes me to nearly fall so its more for security really!
i can walk reasonably long distances now but stiffen up terribly afterwards.
the MRSA sounds absolutly terrible, being faced with something like that is out of your worst nightmares and i can really feel for you.
kids nd animals are just the best tonic aren't they!!

God yes - love my dogs. They've kept me company and kept me sane. I had to be in hospital for 6 weeks and it was them I missed more than anything.
Good luck on your return to work. Don't over do it.
Keep smiling

By the way, I had the original knee replacement done by a German surgeon at Bradford Royal Infirmary. He was "a bad four letter word".  :P
I am now under a surgeon at Scarborough who is much much better.
