Is this cause for concern?
« on: May 07, 2007, 08:32:34 PM »
I am 30, distance running for 10 years,  and have been lucky enough never to experience pain or injury.

I fell on the ice 3 and 1/2 months ago and twisted my knee.  My knee was stable and after two days the pain was 75% gone, but it hasn't improved since.

My family doctor ordered an MRI and said that I had a bone bruise, but my cartilage and ligaments were fine.  He ordered me to stay off it and if it didn't improve in two weeks to go to an orthopedic specialist.

The specialist said that I had minor MCL damage and minor tendon damage and that I could go back to working out slowly, which I have.

I am in constant mild discomfort.  My upper shin is sensitive to the touch and the back of my knee aches.  I have run on it a little and it doesn't seem to make it worse, but I've seen no improvement in 3 and 1/2 months and I'm afraid to intensify my workouts.

I am anxious to get back to where I was prior to the injury, but I don't want to cause more serious problems.

Thank you so much for any advice you can provide.

Bone bruise take time to heal, also MCL damages. I have a grade 2 tear in my LCL and my phys have said count with 6 months.
So I would say patience and not run into too much exercise too fast is the key to get back. Better let this take time then rush and get setbacks.
Surgery 6 times left knee torn meniscus, RSDS,chondromalacia, nervdamage cause constant nervpain, chronic inflamm.
Spinaldamage wheeler 100%.
Right knee damaged aug-06, use brace surgery 4/9-07.LCL tear.

Thank you so much for the advice.

I just keep reading that minor MCL injuries take 2 to 6 weeks to heal and I am just past 15 weeks, so I'm starting to worry.  Also, I was told by the orthopedic specialist that my bone bruise was quite minor.

My orthopedic specialist (who seemed excellent, by the way, I'm just being cautious) told me to walk for two weeks and then I could start running 1/2 mile per day.  He told me I could add 1/2 mile per week after that until I am back to where I want to be.  I am following that and today will be my first day at 1.5 miles.

As I said before, I am fortunate to have no experience with injuries or recoveries, so I have no idea what to expect.

I really appreciate your advice and if you or anyone else have anything else to add about the injury or my exercise plan, I'd really appreciate that as well.

Thank you very much.
