So frustrated! In pain, please give me some insight...
« on: April 24, 2007, 06:34:08 PM »
I have posted before but here's my story-
Jan. 07  Pain started in left knee.  24 hrs a day, no relief.  Take anti-inflammatories but have to quit due to stomach problems.
Jan./Feb 07- Pain continues.  Begin physical therapy.  Docs suggest it is Patellofemoral syndrome
MRI/X-ray are normal except for "degenerative medial meniscus."
Mar 14 07- Pain has not let up at all.  Brace isn't helping.  See Orthopedist.  He says ease up on PT.  Doesn't want to do surgery or injections. During all of this, I'm living off of painkillers like tramadol and darvocet.

Mar 30 07 - Return to Orthopedist.  He decides to give me a cortisone shot.  Pain increases for the next week after.  Have slight relief but now right knee is hurting.  Call doctor.  They say it's from limping due to left knee pain.

April 5 07 - Pain wakes me up at night despite painkillers.  Pain is in both knees.  Can feel it "running down" the back sides of each leg.  Go to chiropractor.  He makes adjustment.  Pain subsides except for orginal pain in left knee.

April 23 07  Return to chiropractor because of lower back pain and knee pain (both knees.)  He made adjustment.  Says my left leg/pelvis is rotated inward.  Today my right knee is killing me more than my left.  He won't do any more adjustments until I see my Ortho again.

Sooo....here I am.  Still hurt.  If I go back to Ortho, what's left for him to do?  He said he wouldn't give me another shot because I'm too young.  Don't know if I could stand another shot anyway.  Seems like the only thing left is surgery.  What could this be?  I have no swelling or locking.  I have full range of movement.  Ortho doesn't seem to think it's PFS anymore because activity doesn't bother me anymore than just sitting around.  Is it a nerve issue?

Why can't my symptoms be straight forward?   :(

I know no one can tell me exactly what's wrong but I was hoping for some insight or maybe someone with a similar experience.

Thanks,
Nicki

Nicki, a second opinion could be useful for you. If let's say that your left leg /pelvis is rotated inwards and someone try to adjust that often other problems can show up. You should need having an OS looking at you from waist and down and maybe also check your back. To see what really is causing the problems. Also limping for a while can make other joints hurt.

Thanks Nettan.  :D
I just left a message with my Ortho's office.  Hopefully they will get back in touch with me soon.  I think that's a good idea to have them check my back also.  I appreciate your response.  I am a big believer in chiropractic but also realize it can't cure everything.  I'll keep you posted.

Chiropractic might be good, but often once you start adjusting something well then another problem shows up.
I think though maybe if you have been limping for a while that has caused  more problems.
I know myself..I have been on crutches for maybe 10 years of my life and other bodyparts have taken lots of damages from that.
Hope they get back to you soon.

I have an appt today at 1:30 with my Orthopedist.  The pain is back in my left knee only.  It is in the back of my knee and it is running down my calf.  I'm at work but barely hanging on because of the pain.  I'll let you know what I find out.

A pain that is in a knee doesn't necessery have to come from the knee. That can sometimes be a big problem when the docs focus on one part and forget that the body is connected in many parts. Sciatica is maybe what the docs suspects, nervpain coming from back.
Good luck to you !! And wether this is a back problem or not at least this is ruled out now by doing Mri.

got my results early.  good news is that my mri was normal as was all my bloodwork.  my knee is feeling somewhat better.  pain is almost tolerable.  I still don't have an answer as to what is going on.  When I asked the doc if I could resume some activity, he basically said if it hurts, don't do it.  Take it easy and be patient.
Not sure how to take that but I am extremely grateful that I'm not dealing with anything more serious or that I'm going to have to have surgery.
Just wanted to let you know the latest.  Hope everyone is well!

hey nettan
from what i understood the doctor to say, my knee got severely inflamed.  it will take some time to resolve.  he said i could start back into exercising, although very gradually.  for example, walking on flat surfaces.  biking.  things like that.  if it hurts, stop and rest my knee for a few days or so.  so i asked him if the pain comes back as severely as it was before, what do i do?  his answer, rest!  that kinda makes me mad but my knee does feel somewhat better so maybe i'll be okay.  he said it's common for this type of thing to come and go and eventually go away forever.  it doesn't sound right to me but what do i know?  i'm at a loss as to where to go with it now.  he's supposed to be the best orthopedist in my town.  to find a knee specialist, i'm sure i'll have to travel a good ways.  i guess if the pain does come back and i can't take it, i'll hit the road.
thanks for your concern and replies!  i hope you're enjoying as pain free a day as possible!
