Oxford Knee problems
« on: April 13, 2007, 07:30:48 PM »
I had an Oxford knee (unicompartmental or half knee) put in two months ago and am concerned I am having problems. When I saw my doctor last he said the x-rays looked perfect and I won't have to see him again. He did not seem concerned about the swelling, pain, or lack of movement. After two months it is still very sore and tender and I can only bend it about 90 degrees. My main concern now is that when I feel of the joint at the scar area and bend it, it feels like gravel or particles are grating in the knee.

Has anyone had a similar experience or information on the time frame for full recovery?

Thanks,

Hi Hobbyfarmers,

Have you looked at the Unicampartmental threads?  You may find more answers there.  I presume you are in physical therapy or is that not so.  And if not you should be.  Your physical therapist should be able to answer questions.  I can't believe you OS said you were done with him after two months but ...

Please check out that area and see if you can get some of your questions answered.

Hope all turns out well.

Deborah

Deborah,

Thanks for the reply.

I did a lot of research on the Oxford knee before I looked for a specialist to put it in. This was done as an outpatient and I was only in the hospital for about 6  hours. The doctor said it would not require any physical therapy because the rest of my knee was very healthy and I had such good range of motion before the surgery. I had the staples removed after six days and the surgeon said it was coming along just fine. I could not bend it much at that time because of the swelling and pain and was using crutches to walk. When I went back at five weeks I had x-rays done and the surgeon said they looked perfect. I also had a lot of swelling, hot spot and tenderness at that time.  He said it would just take time to heal and be patient. He said he used to have patients come back after a year, but felt it was a waste of time. He said he would not have to see me again unless I had some serious problems, but didn't think there was any way I could hurt it. I haven't been able to talk to anyone that had to have pt with the Oxford knee implant. I would sure like to know if this is normal.
