Hi, I would be greatful for any sort of advice im currently 32 yrs of age and have had ongoing problems with both knees since the age of 15, it started with re-curring dislocations which was brought on by puberty, and as I was born with flat shaped patellas which seems to be a hiretitory problems on my mothers side of the family, the diagnosis alwasy seemed to point to  condramalasia patella,  I had 3 dislocations within 18months of each other and my only option given to me by my surgeon was to have re-allingment surgery, which would re-position my patellas and stop the dislocation,  which I decided to go for as I could not continue with such unstable knee joints, I had re-alingment surgery at the age of 16 on both knees within a year so that was then 2 and a half years with full leg plaster casts, with a combination of the dislocations and surgery,  and meantime really poor shapes quads, I continued with physiotherapy and managed to sustain a semi-decent life.  10 years passed which was now the age of 27 and I was starting to get pain in my knees and constant grinding of my knee joints, my original surgeon looked at me and confirmed that I needed more physiotherapy which I accepted at the time but knew that was not the answer, another 5 years on which is now me at the age of 32 my surgeon looked at x-rays and the condition of both knees as I was getting problems with mobilising and general day to day activities, this time he made his conclusion without having the decency to even see me in person, and low and behold the answer is still physiotherapy, I then on that ocassion asked to be referred for a second opinion.  I was referred to Glasgow Victoria Infimary and had a bi-latteral orthroscopy carried out in Feb this year in the hope that something could be done to resolve my problems, the outcome was pretty grim to say the least from being told that I needed physiotherapy I have now been diagnosed with my left knee joint been so badly damaged its completely worn the back of my patella and has also worn out part of my femur, my right knee is heading the same way but not quite as damaged, the only cure in complete replacements in both knees but no surgeon will look at me because of my age, and there is no prognosis apart from waiting until Im a complete cripple and then it will become mandatory, I am ashamed and unispired with the NHS so far in that I am to beleive that there is no medical intervention that will help my cause or maybe its just the case that I havent had a consult with a competant enough surgeon, I am now back at the begining of trying to search for someone that will be able to help me as utill now I keep hitting brick wall after brick wall, so if there is anyone out there that can recommend a consultant/surgeon that is a knee specialist on the NHS I would love to hear from you as Im at the end of my tether.  My last consulant even spoke of going down the replacement road now could lead to disasterous results like wheelchair boud or possible amputations and at the age of 32 im not quite ready for the scrapheap although my knees feel like a 60year olds in constant discomforat and pain, so plesssssssssse help.   :( :'(

Maggie, I am sorry to hear that not enough were done earlier to prevent all these damages.
I would really search around for a bigger Ortho group if I were you. I know sometimes there are more docs working together in one clinic. Maybe that would be a solution to find someone who can help you.
Don't listen to this crap about wheelchair bound and amputation. I don't know what jerk you met who said like that...so foolish to scare you out, when not necessery. There are some people here on this board that has had both PKR and TKR in very young age. I would definately search around and get informed on this site.
Wish you the best.

Thanks for taking the time to post a reply, I seem to at the end of my tether so its good to hear advice from somone other than a doc.  I think your right by saying I need to find another group of ortho's and that seems to be the problem, I live in Stornoway up in the western Isles and every local doc and specialist I see they just keep telling me that there is nothing they can do and the problem seems to be that there is very small circle of people available to my current GP and local consutant, and they seem to be depending on who they know instead of souring a proper knee specialist, but if I could source a reputable hospital of surgeon then I would bring that information to them to make sure I am seen.  I know the thought of TKR is a huge thing to take on at such a young age but I know that if nothing is going to be done I will deteriorate very quickly with the extent of existing damage,  but like you said I have been reading about the sucess stories on here and I am not in a position to take my last consult as the final one, surely in this day and age that there is something that can be done.  Once again thanks for replying.

Maggie, glad to hear that you are positive and will continue to fight. Yeah finding the right OS is always the key to success.
Maybe you can travel to a bigger city to see someone.
Please keep in touch and let me know how you get on.
