so confused and in pain
« on: April 10, 2007, 06:15:01 AM »
I am new to this board. I started my injury in May. I went through physical therapy before they even told me what was wrong. All this did was cause swelling and pain. I was not told much until September when i was told Patella Femeral Syndrome. I was then told Patella tendinitis by the next doctor( was given a tendon strap). I was sent for more therapy, same results. That ended by November. Long story but now I am seeing yet another doctor and he says what the first doctor said. He has ordered me a tracking brace and so far all it does is hurt a bunch. My knee cap sits real high and does not function right. He told me there was nothing else that could be done and I will be this way always. I am in pain, tired of all the run around and feel so confused. I also lost my job during all this since I was marked as no working. Is there something that I should be asking about that they are missing? I have soooo much pain when walking. The swelling still happens. I went back to the place where I got the brace and she could not get it to fit any better. The top strap ends up sitting on my knee cap, the bottom strap has the pressure pad on it and sits in the spot where a normal tendon strap does, this is nowhere near the bottom of my knee cap. The tendon strap itself had caused pain too. It gives and moves so I can't straighten my leg sometimes. I use a cane to walk when I try to go anywhere. This has changed my life a lot. I can not go to the store by myself, by the time I get to the door I have had it. Sorry for my spelling mistakes.

Hi,

Did you see your GP in the first instance? Where are you based? My advice to you at this stage would be to go back to your GP (or another ir you're not happy with their decision) and ask for a referral to an OS who specialises in knee problems. It may be worth paying privately to see a new doctor more quickly but you should have full physical examinations of your knee, long with diagnostic and clinical testing for a specific and correct diagnosis to be made.

Only then can you begin a correct and intensive physio regime which may go some way to strengthening certain muscles in your knee (quads, VMO etc). You should also ask for a custom made full knee support. It may be expensive if you have to pay out of your own pocket but would be well worth it. This should alleviate pain so you can at least get on with your life to a certain extent before any other treatment is consdiered.

You should fight for the right to live without pain. You only have one pair of knees and medical profesionals should be helping you get back to full health instead of giving you the run around because they're not sure what to do.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Let us know what you decide.

Take care,

Laura x

I saw a regular doctor first then an orthopedic, then a Dr. of Physical therapy ( I think) then my family doc, then an Orthopedic Surgeon and now yet a different  OS. Can you tell this was workmans comp to begin with and now it is my insurance ( long story). I got quite the run around and I feel like I still am.
The place where I got my brace said they talked to the OS today and they have ordered me yet a different kind of stabilizing brace. From what I can tell they think wearing the brace will make the knee cap go back in place, I think that sounds impossible.
No pain meds work, the anti imflams do not either. Ice does not help. Resting does not really make it feel better, but compared to walking it is better than that. Walking is what hurts the most.
At what point should I say I do not want to walk at all? Is there such a thing as a point where they give you an electric wheelchair? How do I know when I am at that point to throw a fit about it?
What do I do about no longer having a job? Can I collect while hurt? If they never release me for work am I dissabled?
Sorry so many questions, but with not sleeping this all goes around and around in my head.
Thanks for any input

If you were hurt at work, you do qualify for workers' compensation benefits. So long as you reported your injury when it happened. If you are not collecting benefits, and you were hurt at work, you should get a workers' comp. attorney asap to get you paid. The attorney will be entitled to 20% of your weekly benefit amount, but your money is tax free and you don't have to claim it as income at the end of the year. You will most likely be able to settle a "lump sum" award for your injury in time. I know this because I used to be Human Resources Manager. Good luck and I hope you find health. I know the money won't buy you the health you had, but at least it will take some financial pressure off.
