Need Anyone's Opinion On What To Do
« on: March 25, 2007, 08:40:41 PM »
I dont post much here but my knee is getting pretty bad and im needing some advice.  Im a pretty big guy and have lost about 50lbs recently but here lately my knee at times hurts pretty bad on the top of my kneecap.  At times its pretty bad and other times its not so bad..   But here recently its getting alot worse and hurting more..   I think its bone on bone but im no doctor so I dont know for sure..    when I extend my right knee at the main top right side of the kneecap there is a poppin noise,  and when I stretch or do exercises with my knee I can feel slight grinding in the area as well..   thats where all the pain is coming from is the area of the grind and popping noise..   I have stood it about as long as I can and I have tried to ignore the pain but I cant do it much longer...    anyone have any suggestions on what it could be??   I think its bone on bone and if it keeps getting worse ill have to go and get a Mri or something..   the only reason I have not went yet is I have no insurance and it costs alot of money to get a knee check up around here...     If It is bone on bone in the area what are my options??   what can be done to the area if anything??       I have heard of shots that are being tested that supposed to restore cartlidge anyone know about that??      any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated :)    thanks!

hi there!
firstly congratulations on losing so much weight! i used to be very overweight and lost alot of weight too (4 and a half stone/63 lb's) so know how hard it is!
i would not like to hazard a guess as to what the problem with your knee is,but as it is causing you alot of pain i would definatly get it checked out.
generally i would suggest seeing your GP first,he will more then likely refer you to a knee specialist who will then decide the best course of action, usually an mri/xray/ultra sound depending on what the specialist thinks is the problem.
even if the consultation does cost you abit of money,as it is your health in question it may be worth paying the money, its not worth leaving it any longer as it could get much worse.
please keep me posted how you get on and keep up the great weight loss!!
take care,
claire x

Hi.. congrats on the weight loss.. good work, that is the first step to helping your knees!
SEcond, I think you should see a GP and see what they suggest. Try not to jump to conclusions re: it's bone on bone. Knees can make alot of clunky, catchy, clicky noises and not be bone on bone. It may be that your kneecap is maltracking.. meaning it doesn't travel properly in the groove or something like that...
I know it's expensive, but letting your knee get a whole lot worse will be even more expensive.

Take care of that knee! and try not to jump to conclusions about what the problem is

Thanks for the replies..   Yea im gonna try to get in and get it checked out soon as I can..    I wanna continue to exercise but if it gets any worse that might be a problem..  and I might put the weight back on which is a pretty scary thought  lol      But I will let you know how everything goes with the doctor
