Knee pain
« on: March 23, 2007, 11:59:03 AM »
I have pain in my left knee, caused by playing football.  It has got progressively worse over the past 6 months.  Doctor says it is Anterior knee pain but I am not sure as the symptoms are getting worse.  He suggested I strengthen my quad muscles and over time thing will improve.  I have done this for a number of weeks and it isn't helping.

The main symptoms are:
- When I bend my leg something appears to pop out of the joint, upper part of my knee (outside edge).
- Slight tearing sound when I bend my knee.
- Pain if leg is left bent for any length of time, straighten leg and pain goes quite quickly.

These are the main symptoms, sometimes the knee appears to lock but it is mainly the above I am experiencing.  Can anyone help, shed some light on what it could be?  Thanks

Hi Ali

To me it does sound like a cartilage tear and if I was you I would try and get a second opinion.  I went through the same process of strengtheing the quads and it made no difference also.  In most cases, the cartilage does not heal on its own.

Best of Luck

Ali, for how many weeks have you strenghtening your muscles ? If only a couple of weeks that is not much if you have been getting worse for 6 months. We loose musclemass very quick after a injury.
Have you seen a OS or a GP ?
Surgery 6 times left knee torn meniscus, RSDS,chondromalacia, nervdamage cause constant nervpain, chronic inflamm.

Thanks for the reply, I agree I need to get a second opinion.  Doctors are good at diagnosing various problems but I think I need to see a specialist and/or have a scan just to be on the safe side.

I know I have an injury and I have stupidly played football on it, the problem is I have no pain when walking, running or changing direction etc, the only pain I get is if I don't move my leg for a while, the pain then builds up until I have to straighten my leg.  Then within 20 seconds the pain has gone.  I need to rest it first of all and then get a second opinion before I even think about playing anymore football.

Yes, I have not been doing the exercises for long, they were aggravating the problem more than anything.  The advice was from the GP, gaining a second opinion is probably best and then take it from there.  Thanks for your comments.

What about the Iliotibial band ? Has that been checked ? I doubt that this will be meniscus as you have no problem with walking ,running or changing direction.
Have you seen any PT or worked on your own ?

No, just the doctor.  My knee has been checked and all he said was that it was Anterior knee pain and to go and read up about it.  The thing that is worrying me the most is when I bend my knee, something is popping out of the joint and my knee also cracks quite a bit.  The Iliotibial band, I need to read up on that as it means nothing to me unless you can give me more details.  Thanks.

a site from someone who has suffered from this in 7 years.

A question where did you get exercises from to strenghten the muscles ?

About the exercises, the doc drew me a diagram.  Basically told me to go flat on my back with my knee elevated by using a paper bin or something and to stress my muscles and lift my leg up from a bent poistion to a straight position and do that 100 times a day. 30 degree angle. Also asked me to get weights for my feet.

I need a second opinion and if I do need to strengthen muscles to releave the problem then I will join a gym and use the proper equipment.

I would definately see a OS instead..sorry that the link didn't work..have fixed that now. But also a good PT can see a lot, so if takes a lot of time to see OS try find a PT.

It sucks but I'd advise against football until you sort this. Running may be ok if you say it doesn't hurt but football involves cutting and something like that can wreak havoc on an unstable leg. One day you're cutting, next day you're buckling and then your menisci or ACL are screwed. That'a a worse case, but tread softly--you're too young, I'm sure, to want a buggered knee forever.

Anterior Knee Pain is a catchall that doesn't help you at all. I have had that diagnosis, too, and it's pretty useless, isn't it?

Quad strengthening is often recommended though in truth I am not aware of many people who ACTUALLY gain satisfaction from it. Also, if your quad is not weak currently, making it stronger will not do jack.

I'd get a second opinion. Or third, or more. You sound like me in that we're both still in command of relatively useable knees for our sports but they're not 100%. In my case I've seen four sports docs and probably will see another soon because until one can give me a proper course of treatment, even if that includes amputation of my entire leg, by golly I will keep searching. It's obviously a bigger deal to me than it is to them, not surprisingly.
