Knee pain when running
« on: March 19, 2007, 03:24:29 PM »
A couple of years ago I was half way through a half marathon when I started getting knee pain, which left my only able to hobble the other half of the race.  By the end my left knee was in extreme pain and I was unable to fully straighten it for a week (if I tried I got excruciating pain under my left kneecap)  the doctor told me I had anterior knee pain, sent me for some physio, and told me not to run!  Last week I decided to give running a go again, having got myself fairly fit with walking, cycling and aerobics!  After little more than a mile I started to get the niggley pain I got during the half marathon. Obviously, I stopped running and started walking as I didn't want to be in the position I was in two years earlier.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the pain, which I only get when running?
I do have a pronation problem with my right foot, which I am seeing a podiatrist about in a few weeks time.  Could there be any link, or am I clutching at straws?!!

Hi

If you value your knee, then it would be prudent to get it looked at by a qualified Doctor as soon as possible.   An x-ray may be required.

Best wishes

I have seen a doctor, had it x-rayed, and all I got told was that it was anterior knee pain, which doesn't really help!

Anterior KNEE pain is a cop out diagnosis. It means you have pain related to the Patello Femoral Joint but we're not really sure why! There are alot of things that could be going on with that knee.. .chondromalacia ( A softening of the cartilage on the patella) maltracking (when the kneecap doesn't move as it should) all kinds of things...
Fortunately for you.. it seems it's only a problem with running. If I were you, I would just stay away from running.  But if you are really concerned seak the opinion of a qualified orthopedic surgeon.
