thank god for second opinions
« on: March 01, 2007, 01:54:36 AM »
My exact situation isn't knee related, but it still relates. To sum this all up for those who don't want to read the whole story, if u feel like ur not being listened to, GET A SECOND OPINION.

So, in late december I rolled my ankle really badly. There was a lot of pain, swelling bruising and a rather loud crack at the noise of injury

4 days go by, still no better so I go get xrays. The dr tells me to take like 9 days off soccer.

So that time goes by, and I play soccer. Ankle still feels like a trick ankle, so I go to the dr, who barely looks at it, takes xrays incorrectly and tells me I'm fine, but puts me in a bot. Two weeks later, stil not better. I go back, get more xrays (which do show ankle instability) but only because I insisted. She still insisted I was fine and told my mom that I thought something was wrong bc I was anorexic.

Another 2-3 weeks in a boot later, I get a second opinion. I was 100% right. I have gross instability that needs urgent surgical repair. The dr compared it to trying to play on an ACL deficient knee.

So, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

I always have had problems with both my ankles because of soccer and basketball that I play. Nothing really serious though, and I hate going to the doctors so I just rest them and in a few weeks I am playing again. But recently i hurt my knee, heard a cracking sounds as I fell..went to the doctor told me I was fine, went back another 2 times within 5 weeks and he tells me I am fine and most likely it was just an acl/mcl strain and to start running and playing again. I played soccer today, for only a few minutes because my knee felt really weak and not stable enough to play at full capacity.  So I am questioning my doctor and if I should go and see an specialist.  I just want to know what is wrong, so I don't make my knee worse.  It is very frustrating for me seeing as how all I do is play sports. (soccer 3 days a week and hockey twice a week.)

Hi there

Glad to hear that you finally got some answers. I definately agree that a second opinion is the way to go even a third or fourth if needed. I have had so many problems with some consultants insisting that either I didn't have a problem at the beginning or then saying I have a problem that they can't fix. Believe second opinions sometimes are a god send cause if I didn't get one who knows were I would be, probably just sitting here in pain not knowing what to do.

Hope all gets sorted with you

Trust your body.  You are the only one who knows how you feel.  If the first OS/GP you see dismisses you, or gives you an answer that doesn't go along with your pain level/problem, get a 2nd opinion.  Better to hear the same thing from more than one OS/GP than to hear the wrong one once.

Good to see you are getting the right sort of treatment, just show that you have to push to get any progress, good luck with the Surgery.

I found same problem with my GP about sharp pain in left hand, made no suggestions on how to ease or stop pain just seemed to think I shouild live with it. The pain is less now but does still come and go so might be good to see another GP as you have done with 2nd OS.
