MY RECENT KNEE OP
« on: February 09, 2007, 07:36:01 PM »
:) HELLO!! IM NEW TO THIS SO HERE GOES!! IVE JUST HAD MY SECOND KNEE OP AS THE FIRST DID NO GOOD!!
IVE JUST HAD A LATERAL RELEASE AND PATELLA REALIGNMENT AND SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SOFT TISSUE? SORRY DO NOT KNOW THE TECHNICAL TERM!! ???
I HAD TO STAY IN HOSPITAL OVER NIGHT AS WHEN I CAME ROUND FROM THE DRUGS I WAS IN A GREAT DEAL OF PAIN.
ITS BEEN TWO WEEKS NOW SINCE THE OP.I HAVE A LEG BRACE ON WHICH HAS JUST BEEN ALTERED TO ALLOW ME TO BEND MY LEG (IT WAS JUST STUCK IN 1 POSITION BEFORE IN THE BRACE) IVE GOT ANOTHER 4 WEEKS WITH THE BRACE ON AND HOPEFULLY WILL THEN BE ABLE TO HAVE IT TAKEN OFF!!
I FEEL IM DOING OK WITH THE RECOVERY BUT WONDERED IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HAD A SIMILAR OP AS NO ONE I KNOW HAS SO I WANTED TO KNOW ROUGHLY HOW LONG IT MAY BE BEFORE I COULD DRIVE AGAIN OR WALK WITHOUT THE CRUTCHES.
I CAN PUT VERY SLIGHT PRESSURE ON MY LEG NOW THE BRACE HAS BEEN RE-ANGLED BUT GET VERY FRUSTRATED AS IT WILL NOT BEND AND GETTING IN AND OUT THE BATH ETC IS PRETTY IMPOSSIBLE.I MISS DRIVING SO MUCH!!
ALSO I WILL BE HAVING PHYSIO (WHICH IN THE PAST -PRE-OPS I CANNOT SAY DID ME ANY GOOD) DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG THIS WILL BE FOR??

I HAVE ALSO HEARD ALOT OF BAD PRESS ON THE LATERAL RELEASE OPS WHICH MAKES ME WORRY!!

ANY FEEDBACK WILL BE GREATLY APPRECHIATED!!  :D

Hi there

I had a lateral release done nearly 12 months ago now so I no where your coming from. I was on crutches for about 2 weeks, but my leg wasn't in a brace, thats probably why. it took about 5-6 weeks before i felt confident enough to get back behind the wheel of a car. You do need alot a physio after this type of surgery, I was in physio for nearly 4 months, and it was alot of hard work.  Everyone is different and every individual reacts in different ways to surgery. Stick to what your OS recommends and also what your physio says, you'll be back on your feet in no time.

Fingers crossed for a sppedy recovery

Sarah

I KNOW THE SURGEON SAID THAT HE HAD TO DO MORE THEN HE FIRST THOUGHT AND I ENDED UP STAYING IN HOSPITAL OVERNIGHT!!
HOW LONG WAS IT TIL THE PAIN STOPS!! MINE IS NOT TOO BAD DURING THE DAY BUT ON A NIGHT IT THROBS AND ACHES LIKE MAD!!

Hi

It probably was cause you had more done than me, mine was just the lateral release, I just had one big bandage on it. On the subject of pain I had a great deal of it in the first week or two, but then it subsided just keep taking the pain meds in that period. Also I recommend taking some pain killers about 1hr before doing any physio, my physio was really pushing me and you just need that bit of relief from tablets, but physio will get easier as you progress and the pain will ease up alot.
Unfortunately for me the lateral release was not a success, and at the moment waiting on my OS to give me some other options. Not to say that is won't be successful in your case, you do like you said hear good and bad things about this surgery, but just keep you fingers crossed and hopefully your results will be good ones.

Hope everythink turns out okay

Sarah

Hi

Not to technical with these things either. But from what I understand a lateral release and a TTT are not the same type of procedure. They are both for realignment of the patella but a TTT is a more major procedure. From what i've read on this I've found out that a TTT is a Tibial Tubercle transfer. This is when the OS would cut the bone where the patella tendon is attached  and move it to more a aligned position and then attach it with one or two screws. This is done through open surgery not a arthroscopy and it takes alot of recovery. If you look it up on this site there is plenty of info on it.

Hope this helps

Yeah I had a proper incision at the top left side of my knee and 2 keyhole incisions at the bottom aswell, so I think that maybe that is normal for a lateral release arthroscopy, i'm not sure.

You might want to post in the specialist section on patella tracking issues.  You miost likely had a VMO Advancement and LR done.  That would explain the incision 3 inch incision and the brace.  It would mean that the keyhole incisions were for the the LR being done via a scope.  Ask you doctor for sure.    The brace would then be to protec the VMO as it heals since it would be cut and then stitched back together.  I had this done recently.  I am 4 weeks post surgery and am just getting range of motion back - but I still have the brace.  The recovery is different than for a LR alone as is the phyical therapy as they protect that muscle and get it firing again!
6/03/89 - First Knee Cap Disclocation
7/05/89 - Returned to work
6/17/06 - Tramatic Knee Cap Dislocation and Vertical Fractured Patella
6/28/06 - ORIF - Screws - no wires
8/24/06 - Ditched the brace - start PT
9/20/06 - First spinning
1/15/07 - screw removal, LR , VMO Advanc  & patella cleanupl

hello thanks for your response kimmy i will do that!! i hope you get better soon!! i can now sort of get up the stairs (other then on my bum!!) and put abit of pressure on that leg......ive got very little bend in my knee at the moment though and feel i'll never get back to normal!! ive got my brace on til the 6th march which is when i next go to see my surgeon/specialist.do you have any idea after then how long i will be off work for??? i can't imagine i'll be able to walk properly for a while after the brace is removed as 6 weeks with it on is a long time!! i'll be glad to get it off but then feel safer with it on as i can not over bend it and its very padded so it protects my knee well.....
